Location: Beaumont Hospital & Affiliated Sites
Reports to: Pharmacy Service Line Manager or Clinical Specialist Pharmacist
Salary: Senior Pharmacist Scale (€76,282 – €88,460) – in line with Government pay policy
Hours of Work: Full‑Time, 35 hours per week

Job Summary
The provision of a pharmaceutical service to patients consistent with the mission and ethos of the Pharmacy Department and the hospital. The Pharmacy Department strives to safely and efficiently source, acquire, purchase, store, formulate, compound and distribute all drugs and medicines used in Beaumont Hospital, to the highest standards, and to advise on the safe, effective and rational use of these drugs and medicines, so as to improve the quality of life of patients who come under our care.
Responsibilities

Maintain throughout the Hospital an awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all Hospital activities.
Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Values of the Hospital.
Participate in the pharmaceutical service as part of a punctual, dedicated and professional team.
Create, promote and maintain open communications and healthy working relationships.
Maintain the principles of equity, accountability and quality in daily work.
Participate in departmental mentor/mentee and tutor/tutee programmes.
Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical service, including the supply of medicines and related items, storage, supply and dispensing of all items in accordance with quality and value for money.
Identify, develop and implement policies and operational processes under the supervision of the appropriate Pharmacy Service Manager at the standards of best practice.
Review medication orders for in‑patients and out‑patients, checking every prescription order for accuracy and suitability and ensuring safe dispensing according to SOP.
Ensure a detailed patient medication history is obtained and manage potential drug‑drug interactions, illicit drug use, and discuss relevant interactions with consulting team.
Educate and counsel patients about their medications and manage side effects according to procedure.
Review relevant laboratory results and monitor and promote adherence.
Record activities on the dispensing programme and additional workload/interventions when requested.
Collaborate with medical and nursing colleagues to advise on safe and effective use of medicines and provide Medicines Information where required.
Participate in multidisciplinary teams regarding the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical agents.
Ensure receipt of goods, storage, supply, dispensing, record keeping in line with local policy and legislative requirements.
Provide ward‑based clinical services, including drug reviews and clinical input on all aspects of the medication use process.
Collate and input data concerning drug usage in the hospital in line with departmental policy.
Perform all duties in accordance with Pharmacy Department procedures and protocols and hospital wide procedures.
Participate in continuing education and research activities consistent with the post.
Ensure cost‑effective use of medicines and advise line manager of any changes likely to lead to significant expenditure or purchasing pattern changes.
Create protocols and guidelines in consultation with medical, nursing staff and line manager to deliver optimal and economical patient care.
Ensure compliance with agreed clinical guidelines and legal requirements (Pharmacy Act 2007 and related regulations).
Measure, analyse and optimise the medication use process through regular clinical audit.
Adhere to health and safety protocols and promptly address areas of non‑compliance.
Perform duties including on‑call and extended opening rosters including weekend openings as assigned by the Head of Pharmacy Services.
Perform other duties appropriate to the post as assigned by the Chief Executive or designated Officer.

Staff Training

Provide training and advice on Pharmacy Department services to ward, nursing, medical and pharmacy staff.
Participate in the induction of new Pharmacy staff.
Participate in training, development and supervision of Pharmacy Technicians.
Act as a pharmacy mentor for Pharmacy Technicians, Interns and Basic Grade Pharmacists.
Comply with all Hospital and Departmental policies & procedures, working safely and efficiently.
Undertake any other duties appropriate to the post on request of the relevant Chief II Pharmacist or Head of Pharmacy.
Contribute to service review.

Health and Safety

Work within Health & Safety hospital policies, comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act, and other legislative requirements.
Record all accidents and untoward occurrences according to hospital policy.
Attend fire lectures and drills, and be fully aware of fire alarms, emergency equipment and exits.
Ensure compliance with standards concerning Manual Handling, Security, Infection Control, and Safe Precautions.
Adopt correct administrative procedures when dealing with patient complaints.
Undergo mandatory training in infection prevention and control and comply with all required measures.
Familiarise with the hospital’s Infection Control Policies, including Hand Hygiene, Uniform, Personal Protective Clothing policies.
Incorporate up‑to‑date evidence supporting safe infection control practices and proper sharps disposal.
Treat confidential information about patients and staff with confidentiality, in accordance with Data Protection Act and EU regulations.
Maintain integrity and quality of computerised and manual data.
Perform other duties appropriate to the post that may be introduced by the Head of Pharmacy Services.

Qualifications

Mandatory:

Registered Pharmacist with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (or entitled to be registered).
At least three years of satisfactory post‑registration hospital experience.
Possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including high standard of suitability and management ability) for proper discharge of duties.


Additional: For civil or public service pension holders, pension abatement provisions apply as per the Public Service Pensions Act 2012.
