Job Title: Basic Grade Medical Scientist (Assigned to Haematology/Blood Transfusion & Clinical Chemistry) and Basic Grade Medical Scientist (Assigend to Haematology & Blood Transfusion) Reports to: Chief Medical Scientist/Nominated Deputy in the relevant area.
Location:Bon Secours Hospital Dublin Job Purpose:The fundamental philosophy guiding this position is to promote and preserve the Bon Secours Mission, Values and Ethos.
To participate in the provision of a quality laboratory service for the benefit of our patients and stakeholders.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: In collaboration with the Chief Medical Scientist/Nominated Deputy: Perform routine laboratory scientific work to the highest standard in accordance with the Department's policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Receive training and maintain competence in all relevant areas of the laboratory services.
Support colleagues and work collaboratively with all team members.
In co-operation with the Consultant Haematologist, Laboratory Manager and Chief Medical Scientist, participate in service development and improvement.
Participate as required in the registration, custody and stock level of reagents and other consumables.
Receive and record details of non-conformances, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate the circumstances with the appropriate team members, take the necessary corrective action and report according to procedure.
Participate in evaluating equipment, reagents, and consumables.
Assist in ensuring compliance with international and national guidelines and standards for the provision of service and actively participate in internal quality control and external quality assessment.
Participate in performance review and development and in continuous professional development.
Adhere to all laboratory's standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines.
Participate in facilitating arrangements for educating and training staff.
Participate in the on-call roster.
Adhere to quality standards and ensuring a quality service is always provided.
The post holder may be required to perform other duties as appropriate to the post and to contribute to the development of the post whilst in office.
The post holder will be assigned to Haematology/Blood transfusion but may be required to cover Clinical Chemistry following appropriate training if required.
Actively and positively support the Hospital in maintaining JCI and ISO***** accreditation and any other best practice standards or guidelines that may apply to diagnostic laboratories.
Perform tasks and duties in a manner that ensures compliance with relevant regulations including the Blood Directive *******/EC and the Medical Devices Directives *****/EC and *****/EC, where applicable.
Complete assigned actions, including those required in the close-out of non-conformances, change control and complaints, in a timely manner and to a high standard.
Participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with health and safety regulations, ensuring safe working practices and a safe working environment.
Assist and co-operate with the Pathology management team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents.
Participate as required in developing the laboratory information system for the department.
Perform other duties as requested by the Laboratory Manager or Chief Medical Scientist.
Maintain documentation, equipment, and stock Maintain and promote safe work practices.
Liaise with health workers and others to continuously improve the service.
Participate in the education and training of healthcare workers.
Participate in research and development activities.
Demonstrate continuing professional development.
Demonstrate professional accountability for Medical Scientists practice.
Behave in a manner consistent with organisational values.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Education Candidates for appointment must Possess: Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).
Or Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).
Or Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork - Cork Institute of Technology course AND Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice.
Or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) AND Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology (Awarded prior to ****).
Or Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) AND BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences, University College Cork (UCC).
(Awarded prior to ****).
Or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, (DIT) or the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) (Awarded prior to ****).
Or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science awarded before **** by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).
Or An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
And Membership or eligibility for Membership/Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
Must be registered with CORU or eligible for membership upon completion of study.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE Experience working in iso***** accredited Haematology/Blood transfusion laboratory.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE Working knowledge of Q-Pulse.
Experience of working with Laboratory Information System (i.e.. iLab) ESSENTIAL SKILLS Good interpersonal/people skills, ability to work on own initiative, problem solving skills, patience, diligence, honesty, excellent communication skills Ability to detect errors, follow procedures and troubleshoot.
Ability to work on own initiative Team Player Good Communication Skills.
