Overview of role
The Recovery Nurse is responsible for providing, maintaining and developing patient centred care to a high standard.
This is achieved through effective organisation of nursing services in the Theatre and the overall administration of the unit.
The staff Nurse will be required to possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of Sports Surgery Clinic.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain throughout the Clinic an awareness of the primacy of patient in relation to all clinic activities.
Create a culture of accountability, openness to change, respect for the individual and teamwork that supports the achievement.
Create and promote healthy working relationships.
Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the clinic.
The person chosen will be accountable for the nursing service provided to patients in pre-operative and post-operative areas.
This includes making provisions for the best possible standard of nursing care of patients at all times.
Communicate with relatives and visitors of patients as required.
Actively participate in the clinic's Accreditation programme and the ethos of Continuous Quality Improvement and implement and maintain procedures in theatre.
Keep the Director of Nursing apprised of all issues as required.
Liaise with the Director of Nursing to ensure efficient and effective use of patient care consumables and communicate changes to staff.
Liaise with the Director of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Managers (III/II/I), Staff Nurses and support staff in the development and maintenance of a high quality service.
Collaborate with the Director of Nursing in planning future service developments for the department.
Communicate with Clinical Nurse Managers at floor level to ensure continuity of nursing care and the safe transfer of patients.
Promote an environment that is conducive to learning and the development of best practice to enhance staff retention and good industrial relations.
Ensure that appropriate health and safety, fire and other statutory regulations are adhered to.
Change management – drive and facilitate the changes required to meet the needs of the department.
Communicate with the wards and other departments to ensure continuity of patient care and safe transfer of patients to Day Ward and In Patient ward via trolley or bed.
Patients transferred to In patient - Ward by Recovery staff at night.
Maintain safe custody of controlled drugs according to clinic policy.
Co-ordination and maintenance of equipment and monitoring the use of resources to prevent unnecessary expenditure by misuse.
Ensure incidents and near misses involving patients and staff are documented and reported in accordance with clinic policies, procedures and guidelines.
Contribute to all aspects of audit in respect of quality care, nursing standards and manpower planning.
All staff must attend mandatory in-service training.
Monitor Infection Control policies and liaise with Infection Control Nurse.
Ensure Health & Safety standards are enforced.
Use knowledge, judgement and experience to develop ways of coping with crisis situation.
Observe and uphold daily cleaning standards in the department.
Report any inadequacies.
Establish and maintain high quality standards of patient care by demonstrating good leadership skills in the delivery of care and acting as a role model for staff.
Oversee Staff Nurses in developing and expanding the Scope of Nursing Practice in Recovery Nursing.
Ensure the maintenance of a suitable environment for patients and staff with particular emphasis on health and safety factors.
Manage conflict to effective resolution.
Effective communication with all personnel contributing to patient care within the clinic.
Ensure infection control protocols, guidelines and standards are developed and implemented.
These functions will be delegated to staff nurses who are assigned as Infection Control Link Nurses.
As part of management in the Department be involved in strategic planning.
As a nurse practitioner you must practice within the Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with Policies and Procedures of Sports Surgery Clinic.
Ensure each patient is treated as an individual, and that his/her needs are attended to and their physical, psychological and religious well being is respected.
Set standards of Nursing Practice.
Communicate these standards to the Nursing Personnel; audit and change standards as required.
Liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that care delivery is patient focused and of the highest standard.
Ensure that a professional standard of behaviour is maintained at all times.
Adherence to departmental patient identification policy at all times.
Provide a high standard of safe practice for patient care.
Ensure that all equipment in the Recovery is checked by an appropriate user according to clinic policy.
Anticipate and be aware of needs of the multidisciplinary team during anaesthetic and operative process.
Preserve the dignity and rights of the patients at all times during their stay in the Recovery department, anaesthetised or conscious.
Document and record accurately all details of nursing care delivered in the peri-operative period.
Maintain adequate levels of Anaesthetic / Pharmaceutical supplies.
Ensure patient confidentiality is respected and maintained at all times.
Ensure nursing care is based on the latest research findings and constitutes best practice.
Demonstrate initiative and be receptive to new ideas and development.
Display qualities of leadership and good communication with all users of service and other service providers.
Qualifications & Experience
Be a Registered General Nurse and registered with An Bord Altranais on the live register.
Have a minimum of 5 years post registration experience; with at least 3 years experience in theatre/recovery.
Demonstrate experience of managing a team of nurses and ideally experience in an orthopaedic facility.
Be computer literate.
Have excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities.
Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.
Be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
Be free from any defect or disease which would render him/her unsuitable to hold office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Be of good character.
