Our Energy team delivers high‑value technical, design and advisory services across a diverse portfolio of energy and infrastructure projects, supporting the transition to a low‑carbon, resilient energy system. Our work spans gas transmission and distribution infrastructure, renewable and low‑carbon energy systems, hydrogen and alternative fuels, and wider energy infrastructure upgrades and decarbonisation initiatives across Ireland and the UK.
Opportunity
This is your chance to join our Energy team. The successful candidate will work within a well‑established and experienced group, benefiting from strong technical mentorship and opportunities to develop a broad skillset spanning engineering design and project delivery. This is a permanent position offering opportunities to develop technical skills and gain broader project experience within the Energy team.
The role will involve contributing to the design, management and delivery of mechanical work packages for complex energy infrastructure projects, including critical gas network upgrades and repurposing works, alongside emerging energy solutions. You will work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team, contributing from early feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and delivery, on projects that are critical to long‑term energy security and sustainability.
This role is currently vacant, and we are seeking to appoint a successful candidate as soon as possible.
As a Mechanical Engineer At Arup, You Will

Deliver elements of mechanical design for energy infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on gas transmission and distribution infrastructure and associated facilities.
Understand the appointed design scope, identify associated deliverables and define the workflow required to complete assigned elements of work.
Support the management of project budgets, schedules and deliverables to meet agreed targets.
Work within a multi‑disciplinary design team including Mechanical, Process, Civil, E&I and drafting teams to produce designs, drawings, reports and specifications.
Produce design reports, calculations and drawings including PFDs, P&IDs, mechanical arrangements, mechanical details and hazardous area drawings.
Plan and manage assigned workload, ensuring appropriate quality assurance and coordination within the design team.
Design mechanical systems from concept and feasibility stages through to detailed design.
Ensure all designs are completed in accordance with relevant standards, specifications, safety requirements and project procedures.

Qualifications

A relevant third‑level Degree (Level 8 or higher) in Mechanical Engineering (or a related discipline).
Circa 3–5 years’ post‑qualification experience, primarily in mechanical design, gained within a consultancy or comparable engineering environment.
Membership of a relevant professional body.
Experience in mechanical design across energy, infrastructure, industrial or process‑based projects.
Experience in gas infrastructure design and associated project delivery, including exposure to gas networks, stations or pipeline‑based systems.
Experience in equipment sizing, pipeline routing, site layouts and associated C&I services (desirable).
Experience in, or demonstrable interest in, energy transition applications such as hydrogen, biogas, eFuels or other alternative fuels.
Familiarity with industry software packages such as AutoCAD, Plant 3D and/or Revit.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Good communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within multi‑disciplinary teams.
