Growing together.About The RoleAs Senior Principal Data Engineer, you will be developing and maturing our Data Engineering Capability and mentoring a team focused on developing a new, cutting-edge cloud-based data platform that will support advanced analytics and machine learning models to improve health outcomes for our members. You will be focused on providing expert technical guidance on the environment and the data architecture working on integrating multiple complex data sources into our data platform with a mix of different infrastructure (on-prem and cloud) and various data applications and tools (i.e. Spark, Hive, HBase, Airflow, etc.). You will be making critical decisions, focused on innovation; developing proofs of concepts that leverage data in new and exciting ways. If yes, we need your organizational talents and business discipline to help fuel the mission of building modern healthcare analytics powered by the data.Primary ResponsibilitiesMentor a talented team of data engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learningCollaborate with Data Science and Business Intelligence leaders to design and implement a secure, compliant, and scalable data infrastructure to support the organization’s growing data needsBuild common frameworks and best practices in code development, deployment and automation/orchestration of data pipelinesIdentify, design, and champion process improvements throughout the processing lifecycle for data quality initiatives ensuring data integrityData encryptionData de-identification to ensure data securityRole-based data accessAutomating manual processesOptimizing data deliveryTuning and optimizing data processes for greater scalabilityOwn and manage the deliverables assigned to the data engineering team, ensuring accurate, concise documentation of the code base including data ingestion and enrichment pipelines that support critical analytics, as well as production pipelines that feed into downstream systemsDrive a performance-driven culture, setting clear goals and measuring resultsRequired QualificationsMS/BA degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or other technology fieldsProven track record of building and scaling high-performing data engineering teamsDeep understanding of DevOps tools, Git workflow and building CI/CD pipelinesSolid experience in data architecture, data modeling, data warehousing, and big data technologies (Snowflake, Scala, Spark, PySpark, etc.) as well as cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)Solid leadership qualities, including strategic thinking, problem-solving, cross team collaborationSolid experience in data engineering leadership roles, preferably within the healthcare industryA passion for innovation and a desire to make a significant impact on the healthcare industryPreferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Mathematics, or other technology related fieldsHealthcare industry knowledge and experienceData engineering certificationsData virtualization tools and technology experience with tools like Python Dash, Tableau, R-shiny, etc.Experience building statistical models using SAS or RML and/or AI model development and deploymentAt UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone.
