Job Description:
The Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse plays a vital role in ensuring patients are medically fit and adequately prepared for surgery.
This involves conducting comprehensive pre-operative assessments, identifying and managing risks, providing patient education, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments including medical history review, physical examinations, and necessary investigations.
* Identify and manage existing medical conditions that may impact surgical outcomes.
* Coordinate and facilitate necessary pre-operative tests such as blood work, ECGs, MRSA screening, and imaging.
* Recognise and escalate any potential risks to the appropriate consultant or consultant anaesthetist.
* Omit patients for surgery by ensuring they are fit and adequately prepared.
* Provide patient education regarding their upcoming procedure, anaesthesia, fasting guidelines, and medication adjustments.
* Address patient concerns, answer questions, and provide reassurance.
Administrative Duties:
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records ensuring all pre-assessment documentation is completed.
* Ensure all test results are reviewed and communicated properly.
* Schedule follow-up assessments.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives in the department.
* Ensure adherence to hospital policies, national guidelines, and best practices in preoperative assessment.
Qualifications & Experience:
* Be registered in the general division of the register of nurses kept by NMBI.
* Experience in Phlebotomy
* Experience in ECG recording desirable
* Strong clinical assessment skills, and the ability to identify and manage risk factors.
* Excellent Communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with patients and the multidisciplinary team.
* Proficiency in using computers and patient management system, and Microsoft teams.
* Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
