Nurse Practice Development Co-ordinator – Assistant Director of Nursing
Job Summary
The Nurse Practice Development Co-ordinator (ADON) leads the Nurse Practice Development Department, coordinating the development of excellence in nursing practice, and will meet set objectives within set time-scales.
The role supports clinical and professional leadership, implements and evaluates nursing practice standards, facilitates education and quality improvement, promotes evidence-based practice and regulatory compliance, and enhances person-centred care across nursing services.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and develop the Nurse Practice Development Department, evaluating, developing, implementing, and monitoring nursing practice in all areas of the hospital.
Oversee nursing service quality assurance programmes, ensuring delivery of the highest standard of patient-focused nursing care.
Provide leadership on quality and safety, managing and implementing an annual nursing service practice development and improvement plan.
Act as a professional role model, consistent with the mission, vision, values, and strategic direction of Tallaght University Hospital.
Facilitate change, sustaining innovations in nursing practice, and support teaching environments for undergraduate student nurses.
Develop patient-centred nursing practices through care processes that enhance clinical effectiveness and outcomes.
Oversee the development of the role for HCAs, implementing policies and education that enhance clinical effectiveness.
Support staff in formulating evidence-based policies, protocols, guidelines, and procedures ensuring high standard of patient-focused nursing care.
Collaborate with the Centre for Learning and Development to oversee induction and development programmes for newly registered staff.
Lead the Research and Education initiatives within the department, encouraging research awareness and activity.
Regularly conduct education and training needs assessments for the nursing workforce in partnership with the Centre for Learning and Development.
Report to the Director of Nursing & Integrated Care and act as a key member of the Senior Nursing Executive.
Commit to ongoing professional development, completing relevant internal training programmes.
Coordinate and manage the Clinical Placement Coordinators, Student Allocation Liaison Officers, and other related roles to ensure optimal learning environments for student nurses.
Collaborate with national bodies and education institutions to maintain learning objectives for institutional placements.
Lead and support quality and safety initiatives, including audits of nursing prescribing, radiological referral, and infection control.
Ensure compliance with national and HSE protocols (HIQA standards, HSE procedures, etc.).
Maintain a culture of audit and evaluation across the department and nursing service.
Provide governance support for nursing practice, including policy development, standard setting and resource allocation.
Support other clinical specialists, advanced nurse practitioners, and leadership development programmes.
Act as Site Coordinator for nurse prescribing and radiological referral monitoring.
Play an active role in supporting the digital transformation strategy and ICT initiatives in nursing practice.
Ensure all staff meet mandatory training and education requirements.
Collaborate with the Centre for Learning and Development, higher education institutions and external bodies to develop educational programmes.
Support the implementation of quality care metrics and action plans to improve care standards.
Provide support to nursing staff and students in achieving accreditation and publication goals.
Support experiential learning and clinical support for new and existing staff.
Coordinate HR and staff management functions relevant to the department.
Maintain good working relationships with colleagues and other staff.
Advise and support staff on technology utilisation and facility training.
Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Hygiene and Infection Control standards.
Lead within the Quality, Safety and Risk Management Programme.
Maintain confidentiality and data protection compliance.
Lead development of hospital groups and adapt reporting relationships as required.
Qualifications
Registered on the General Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or entitled to be so registered.
Minimum 7 years post-registration experience, with at least 3 years at a grade of CNM2 or above in an acute care setting.
Postgraduate award at level 9 (Master's Degree) or higher.
Experience with undergraduate nursing students in clinical practice or related training.
Clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to discharge the role effectively.
Ability to undertake research and analyze, report on and effect change in nursing practice.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Evidence of continuing learning and professional development.
Proven clinical and managerial ability with vision and leadership skills aligned with HSE, SDU and HSE Dublin Midlands strategic goals.
Experience in work measurement, quality programme implementation and evaluation, and the re-organisation of nursing practice.
Experience with contemporary information technology to support nursing practice.
Experience & Eligibility
Age restriction: under 65 on the first of the month in which the application deadline occurs (subject to exception for new entrants).
Must be fully competent and medically fit to perform the duties.
Good character.
