The Opportunity
At Almac, we are committed to delivering quality, safety and excellence across all our operations. As our Athlone facilities continue to grow, we are seeking a Health & Safety Manager to lead and develop our Health & Safety function.
In this key leadership role, you will be responsible for managing and evolving Health & Safety systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while driving continuous improvement in both occupational and process safety. You will act as the subject matter expert across chemical safety and hazardous manufacturing environments, supporting safe, compliant and efficient operations.
This is a highly visible position where you will work cross-functionally, influence strategic direction, and promote a strong, proactive safety culture across site and wider operations.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, manage and develop the Health & Safety team, driving performance and continuous professional development
Act as the key point of contact for Health & Safety across the site, providing expert advice to stakeholders and senior leadership
Promote and embed a strong safety culture through effective communication, engagement and leadership
Ensure compliance with all relevant Health & Safety legislation, industry standards and best practice
Support process safety activities, including hazard identification and risk assessments (e.g. HAZOP, LOPA, SIL)
Manage and support the transition to, and ongoing compliance with, COMAH / Seveso equivalent requirements
Develop and implement safe systems of work across manufacturing, engineering and operational activities
Lead and oversee accident and incident investigations, ensuring robust reporting, root cause analysis and follow-up actions
Lead site audits, inspections and continuous improvement initiatives
Develop and manage site-wide Health & Safety training programmes
Act as a key liaison with regulatory bodies, external stakeholders and local authorities
Establish and maintain emergency preparedness and response systems
Ensure strong governance, reporting and tracking of Health & Safety performance metrics
Support cross-functional teams to ensure safety considerations are integrated into operational and project activities
What you need to be Successful
Chartered Safety Practitioner (or working towards)
Substantial experience managing Health & Safety within a chemical, pharmaceutical or manufacturing environment
Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, including chemical safety and regulatory compliance
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams
Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline
Process safety leadership qualification such as HAZOP chair, PSM
Experience supporting or implementing ISO 45001 management systems
Thorough understanding of material characterisation, Reaction chemistry Calorimetry, Basis of safety, Hazard identification and Hazard study stages, LOPA and SIL determination, Relief sizing, DSEAR/ ATEX compliance
Experience engaging with regulatory bodies and leading site compliance programmes
Proven experience in Process Safety Management within a high hazard environment
