Staff Nurse - Day of Surgery Admission (DOSA) / Pre-Assessment Department: Nursing (Surgical / Pre-Operative Care) Job Type: Permanent Hours: Monday-Friday (Day shifts) Location: West Dublin - Private Hospital Salary: €42,000 - €55,000 depending on experience Role Overview This role involves preparing patients for surgery through pre-assessment and day-of-surgery care. You will ensure patients are clinically ready for procedures, support safe and efficient theatre flow, and deliver high-quality, patient-centred nursing care. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties Carry out pre-operative nursing assessments (physical, psychological, social) Prepare patients for surgery on the day of procedure Deliver direct patient care and monitor patient condition Administer medications safely and maintain controlled drug records Recognise and respond to patient needs in surgical and acute settings Pre-Assessment Order and perform tests (e.g. ECGs, blood tests, swabs) Review medical history and identify risks before surgery Educate patients on fasting, medications, and pre-op preparation Work with consultants and anaesthetists to confirm fitness for surgery Patient Care & Communication Provide holistic care to patients and support families Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams Maintain patient dignity, confidentiality, and safety Operations & Administration Maintain accurate patient records and documentation Use hospital IT systems for patient information Ensure proper use of equipment and supplies Report incidents, complaints, or risks appropriately Quality & Safety Follow nursing standards, policies, and legal requirements Participate in audits, quality improvement, and risk management Support a culture of patient safety and continuous improvement Training & Development Maintain professional registration and competencies Attend training and development programmes Support new staff and assist with training where needed Requirements Essential Registered General Nurse with NMBI Minimum 2 years post-registration experience in an acute hospital At least 1 year in a surgical setting Up-to-date Basic Life Support (BLS) Desirable Experience in pre-assessment, surgical, or anaesthetic nursing Skills Strong clinical and assessment skills Good IT and documentation skills Teamwork and communication Awareness of quality and risk management Benefits Pension scheme Career progression opportunities Ongoing training and education support Employee assistance programmes On-site facilities / subsidised meals Skills: Experienced general nurse caring general nurse supportive general nurse NMBI registered nurse
