Director of Care (Person in Charge)
CareChoice is one of Ireland's leading providers of residential and specialist care services, committed to delivering safe, high‑quality, person‑centred care. We are now seeking an experienced Director of Care (Person in Charge) to lead care delivery at CareChoice Swords, one of our largest and most complex homes.
Role
As Director of Care (PIC), you will have overall responsibility for the effective governance and delivery of care services within the designated centre, ensuring full compliance with the Health Act 2007 and HIQA Regulations and Standards. You will lead a structured clinical leadership team, including Assistant Directors of Care, ensuring consistent standards, strong oversight, and high‑quality outcomes across all areas of the home. Working closely with the Director of Operations, you will align care delivery with operational performance, workforce planning, and service development.
Governance, Compliance & Regulatory Leadership
Act as Person in Charge (PIC) for the designated centre, holding full accountability for regulatory compliance.
Ensure compliance with the Health Act 2007 (Care and Welfare of Residents in Designated Centres for Older People) regulations and HIQA National Standards.
Maintain a state of continuous regulatory readiness and lead all inspection processes and responses.
Oversee risk management, incident management, and safeguarding processes across the home.
Clinical Leadership & Service Oversight
Provide leadership across all care services, including long‑term care and ABI.
Ensure effective clinical governance structures are in place and operating consistently.
Act as the senior escalation point for complex clinical and safeguarding matters.
Drive continuous improvement in care quality, safety, and resident outcomes.
Leadership & Team Management
Lead and support the Assistant Directors of Care, ensuring clear accountability, performance oversight, and service alignment.
Promote a culture of professionalism, learning, and resident‑centred care.
Oversee workforce capability, skill mix, and clinical supervision in partnership with HR.
Quality & Resident Experience
Ensure residents receive high‑quality, person‑centred care that promotes dignity, independence, and wellbeing.
Oversee assessment, care planning, and review processes to ensure consistency and quality.
Champion feedback mechanisms and continuous improvement based on resident and family experience.
Operational & Strategic Collaboration
Work in close partnership with the Director of Operations to align care delivery with operational and financial planning.
Contribute to service development, capacity planning, and strategic initiatives within the home.
Support effective cross‑functional collaboration across clinical, operational, and support teams.
Education, Standards & Professional Practice
Ensure adherence to professional standards, including NMBI requirements.
Promote evidence‑based practice and continuous professional development.
Support the delivery of training, competency frameworks, and clinical education programmes.
Person Specification
Registered Nurse with active NMBI registration.
Experience operating at a senior clinical leadership level within a regulated care environment in Ireland.
Postgraduate qualification in healthcare management, leadership, or a related discipline.
Strong knowledge of HIQA regulations, governance frameworks, and inspection processes.
Proven experience as a Person in Charge (PIC) or in a role with equivalent regulatory accountability.
Demonstrated experience in leading quality improvement, risk management, and compliance.
Excellent leadership, communication, and decision‑making skills.
Experience in complex or multi‑service environments (e.g. long‑term care and specialist services).
Experience leading or supporting services through HIQA inspections.
