R&D Technician - Alcon, Cork, Ireland
Alcon, the global leader in eye care, is seeking a highly motivated R&D Technician to support and drive R&D Engineering activities on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. This role focuses on specification, procurement, installation, validation and implementation of new equipment, with responsibility for ongoing maintenance and process support.
Location & Contract
Cork, Ireland – 12‑month fixed‑term contract.
Responsibilities
* Assist R&D Engineering in the specification, design and procurement of new equipment.
* Support process development, characterization and optimisation activities.
* Generate and execute validation documentation, including risk assessments and commissioning plans.
* Maintain R&D Engineering equipment and utilities, including molding machine set‑ups and preventive maintenance.
* Build, install and assemble new equipment, identify and source spare parts.
* Liaise with suppliers and external contractors for quotations, method statements and risk assessments.
* Provide first‑response technical support for all R&D Engineering process and utilities equipment.
* Report daily progress to the Supervisor/Project Engineer and highlight concerns early.
* Ensure project milestones are met on time and within budget.
* Support safety risk assessments for new equipment and processes.
* Investigate and document process issues, reporting findings and solutions to Engineering.
* Maintain compliance with Alcon quality system requirements and H&S regulations.
Qualifications
* Minimum Level 7 qualification in Engineering or a technical discipline.
* Minimum 2 years experience as a process or injection moulding technician (preferred 2–4 years).
* Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment.
* Familiarity with robotics, PLCs, and vision systems.
* Technical competence in operating and repairing highly automated equipment.
* Strong problem‑solving skills and independence.
* Knowledge of ISO, FDA, GMP standards.
