As the renewable energy sector continues to expand and evolve, the complexity of construction and infrastructure projects grows in parallel. To support the delivery of high-value projects and ensure robust contractual protections, we are seeking a Head of Legal Lawyer to join our team. This role is essential in managing the legal and commercial risks inherent in large-scale developments, ensuring that our agreements with contractors, funders, and public sector partners are clear, enforceable, and aligned with industry best practices. The successful candidate will play a key role in safeguarding the company’s interests while facilitating the timely and efficient execution of renewable energy projects.
Please note, This is a hybrid role based at our Waterford office.
Key Accountabilities
Contract Drafting & Negotiation
* Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of construction contracts, including:
* FIDIC, RIAI, NEC, Public Works Contracts (PWC)
* Design & Build, EPC and Turnkey contracts
* Consultancy Agreements, Collateral Warranties, Performance Bonds, Parent Company Guarantees, and Letters of Intent.
* Provide clear contractual advice to project teams and stakeholders throughout project lifecycles.
* Advise on contract interpretation and risk allocation throughout the tender, contract negotiation, and delivery phases.
* Identify, assess, and advise on legal risks and liabilities relating to construction projects, including delays, defects, extensions of time, liquidated damages, and variations.
* Identify, assess and advise on all legal risks and liabilities in relation to all business plans of Greenvolt Next Ireland and UK. This will require a commercial mindset to develop a risk-based assessment of the entire business.
* Work closely with commercial, procurement, and project management teams to ensure contractual risks are properly managed and mitigated.
Project Delivery Support
* Support project delivery teams in contract administration, claims management, and dispute avoidance.
* Liaise with third-party advisors (technical consultants, insurers, external counsel) as required.
Compliance & Regulatory Advice
* Ensure compliance with applicable Irish and EU laws and regulations governing construction, procurement, health and safety, and planning.
* Stay up to date with legislative developments affecting the construction and infrastructure sectors.
Training & Knowledge Sharing
* Develop and deliver training sessions to internal stakeholders on key contractual principles, legal developments, and best practices.
* Promote awareness of legal risks, compliance obligations, and company policies.
Qualifications:
* 4+ years’ PQE in construction law, ideally from a leading Irish firm
* Proven experience managing complex, large-scale developments, including drafting and negotiating construction contracts and related documentation
* Strong understanding of Irish construction law and project finance
* Experience advising on sector-specific risks relating to renewable energy projects, including grid connection agreements, land rights, planning permissions, environmental regulations, and renewable energy incentive schemes (advantageous)
* Exposure to legal aspects of project finance, due diligence, funder requirements, and security packages within the renewable energy or infrastructure sector (advantageous)
* Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal issues clearly and concisely
* Meticulous attention to detail and a proactive mindset
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and legal research skills
