Not funded by a EU programme Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? NoOffer DescriptionThis position will have a role as operational manager (as part of a team) of the Happy Talk national randomised controlled trial, led by Dr Pauline Frizelle, at UCC.The work builds on a small-scale single blind effectiveness trial of “Happy Talk”, a community embedded, targeted selective SLT programme that simultaneously engages with parents and early childhood educators. The pilot trial showed large effects (.6SD) on understanding and moderate effects (.46SD) on a composite language measure, for children from areas of social disadvantage (5). In addition, ‘Happy Talk’ was deemed to be feasible and acceptable to parents and staff and cost- effective (6), making it a suitable programme to be delivered at scale. The proposed study aims to a) evaluate an at scale randomized control trial of ‘Happy Talk’ compared to usual care; b) complete a pre-trial process evaluation to inform intervention implementation – examining factors which promote parental engagement and partnership between SLTs and educators and incorporating these into SLT training and future rollouts of the programme; c) to complete a concurrent process evaluation from a realist perspective to examine how the mechanisms underpinning Happy Talk are influenced by the implementation context and therefore what would need to be considered for successful implementation across varied settings; d) establish barriers and enablers for clinicians in helping conduct trials and e) complete an economic evaluation in which the costs and benefits of ‘Happy Talk’ are compared to standard pre/school care.Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities AssociationPlease note that Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.Project TitleImplementing a targeted selective speech, language, and communication intervention at scale - the case of Happy TalkResponsibilitiesTo conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader. To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies. To gain experience in grant writing. To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator. To become familiar with the publication process. To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, School or College. To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day-to-day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor. To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research. To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.Specific RequirementsA PhD in a field of discipline relevant to the area of investigation e.g. speech and language therapy, applied linguistics public health, psychology.Appropriate Research experience.Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.Good report writing and presentation skillsPrevious laboratory experience and practices are desired.Good analytical skills and computer skills. An ability to work independently to a tight schedule.Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results.Evidence of excellent organisational and communication skills.Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.Ability to work well within a team.High levels of initiative are encouraged.
