Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist - Medico-Legal Assessments
Neuromed is currently seeking a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist to join our growing medico-legal practice providing independent psychiatric assessments and expert reports for courts and legal professionals across Ireland.
Neuromed is a specialist psychiatric practice providing both clinical and medico-legal mental health services across Ireland. The clinic works with a network of consultant psychiatrists delivering independent psychiatric assessments for courts, legal professionals, and insurers, alongside a range of evidence-based clinical services.
Consultations are conducted primarily via secure video consultation, with in-person appointments available at our clinics in Dublin and Galway where requested. Neuromed is committed to clinical excellence, independence, and the delivery of high-quality expert psychiatric opinion in both legal and clinical settings.
Role Description
The role primarily involves conducting independent medico-legal psychiatric assessments and preparing expert reports for court proceedings. Our service receives regular referrals for criminal damage, assault, public order matters, fitness to plead assessments, and cases relating to the Criminal Law (Insanity) Act. We are therefore particuarly interested in psychiatrists with experience in criminal legal aid reporting.
Assessments are typically conducted via secure video consultation, with in-person consultations available at our clinics in Dublin and Galway where required.
Key responsibilities include preparing detailed medico-legal reports for solicitors and courts, providing independent expert psychiatric opinion, and attending court to provide expert witness testimony where required.
The role offers the opportunity to undertake independent expert witness work within an established medico-legal practice. The position is structured primarily around scheduled assessments and report preparation rather than ongoing caseload management, offering flexibility in clinical scheduling.
Full administrative support is provided, including scheduling, documentation management, and liaison with solicitors and courts.
Qualifications
Consultant Psychiatrist registered with the Irish Medical Council.
Experience conducting medico-legal psychiatric assessments and preparing expert reports
Strong analytical, diagnostic, and report-writing skills
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to confidently provide expert evidence in court
Ability to work independently while collaborating with other consultant clinicians
Experience in forensic or medico-legal psychiatric practice is highly desirable
