Offer Description
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Assistant within UCD Spatial Dynamics Lab.
Increasing the uptake of urban cycling is a key pillar in strategies to decarbonise transport in cities across the European Union. Barriers to uptake of this active travel mode are observed across social, cultural and infrastructure sectors. Among these factors, the most cited reason for declining to cycle is safety. Real and perceived safety are heavily influenced by the provision of safe cycling infrastructure, including separated pathways and network coverage, allowing citizens to complete full journeys while avoiding conflicts with heavier, mechanised road users.
For cities to plan and prioritise critical interventions and to measure the efficacy of completed works, it is essential to have access to robust safety data. However, understanding the true picture of cycling safety at city scale is challenging. Underreporting of safety incidents and a lack of consistency in public records obscure the dangers faced by an increasing number of cyclists daily.
The Colourways platform delivers a low-cost tool for assessing cycling favorability of the built environment. By assessing both cycling safety and other factors that impact cycling favorability (green exposure, land use), the system can deliver detailed assessments of real and perceived rider safety. By design, Colourways facilitates the delivery of cycling risk studies but also can be quickly deployed to measure other topics of interest, from counting public utilities to assessing building occupancy.
