Overview
We are recruiting a Clinical Specialist Radiographer for the General X-Ray Department.
The successful candidate will lead, guide, and supervise radiographic staff to ensure the delivery of an effective, efficient, patient-centred service.
The role requires strong leadership, strategic management, and autonomous clinical practice.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Recognise and manage workload and resources, adapting practice as required.
Provide strategic and clinical leadership, fostering healthy working relationships.
Act as deputy for the Resident Specialist Manager during absenteeism.
Lead the day-to-day management of the General and Theatre imaging service, ensuring optimal utilisation of resources.
Advise on equipment selection, purchase, replacement, and upgrade.
Prepare service plans, monitor implementation, and maintain accurate clinical data systems per hospital standards.
Perform general and high-complexity radiographic procedures to the highest professional standards.
Collaborate with consultants to develop patient-management protocols; update the Department handbook accordingly.
Allocate and prioritise workload based on clinical need; advise on patient scheduling and waiting-list optimisation.
Develop and implement operational policies, protocols, and guidelines; conduct systematic audits.
Lead clinical audit activities in accordance with SI 256 of **** and SI *******.
Adjust imaging techniques for compromised patients; justify and optimise radiographic examinations.
Schedule workflow in both general and specialist areas; troubleshoot equipment issues and support risk management.
Maintain consumable usage efficiency and report operational issues to the Radiography Services Manager.
Assess patient suitability for IV injections, checking renal function and contraindications.
Deliver a continuous learning programme for staff, covering new techniques and best practice in line with ALARA principles and relevant statutory instruments.
Supervise and teach junior radiographers, assistants, students, and postgraduate trainees.
Identify abnormal findings on radiographs and promptly communicate them to referring clinicians or radiologists.
Present on radiation protection, health & safety, and patient safety legislation.
Administer IV injections where required and manage contrast reactions following hospital policy.
Uphold patient confidentiality and respect cultural, spiritual, and personal beliefs.
Monitor stock levels and liaise with the Radiographic Service Manager on staff rotations.
Lead in manual handling training and ensure adherence to hospital policy.
Participate in multidisciplinary team activities and maintain radiation safety standards.
Adapt work patterns flexibly, extending hours when patient volume increases.
Participate in the Departmental on-call rota.
Quality & Audit
Maintain and review QA programmes, including weekly huddles and audit plans.
Ensure documentation is current on the Teams platform and promote read/sign compliance.
Report incidents, good catches, and learning opportunities through Viclarity.
Coordinate preventative maintenance of equipment and maintain accurate service records.
Support the Radiographic Service Manager in service development and improvement initiatives.
Investigate and act on complaints, accidents, and incidents per hospital policy.
Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, including radiation safety and infection control.
Maintain complete QA programme documentation and update equipment inspection records.
Provide troubleshooting for imaging and electronic patient systems.
Health & Safety
Maintain a quality assurance programme and liaise with the physicist on safety issues.
Promote a safe environment for staff and patients, applying HIQA standards.
Develop a checklist for system breakdowns and power outages.
Support sustainable energy, water, and waste initiatives.
Monitor diagnostic reference levels and compare with local and national DRLs.
Professional/Education
Develop and maintain a personal development plan and professional portfolio.
Conduct evidence-based research and participate in studies.
Maintain knowledge of evolving clinical profiles, service developments, and licensing requirements.
Participate in CPD and provide peer support.
Engage in performance reviews and demonstrate resilience, flexibility, and a commitment to continual professional development.
Act autonomously within agreed guidelines.
Qualifications & Experience
Degree in Radiography or Diploma from the College of Radiographers.
Registered with the Radiographers Registration Board at CORU.
Minimum 6 years of full-time post-qualification clinical experience.
Postgraduate qualification recognised by the IIRRT (desirable) or specialised modality clinical experience.
Salary
€66,****** – €78,****** per annum based on a 35-hour week.
