Job Description

The Ground Engineering United Kingdom and Ireland (UK&I) team comprises 150 people and provides services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, ground investigation design and interpretation, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for ground engineering works in UK&I and overseas.
We support internal and external clients on a wide variety of projects, predominantly in energy, water (flood alleviation and wastewater), nuclear (decommissioning and new build), power, road, rail, aviation, ports and harbours, commercial and industrial developments, landslip investigation and remediation.
Ground Engineering Role Responsibilities
* Desk studies, site inspections, rockface surveys and geomorphological mapping
* Contribute to the design, planning and procurement of ground investigations
* Supervision of ground investigation fieldwork
* Geological interpretation and preparation of interpretative reports
* Analysis of geotechnical data, preparation of ground models, design and reporting on foundations, retaining walls, soil slope stability, earthworks, rock slope stabilisation
* Use of digital software including Openground for data management and Leapfrog for 3D geological modelling
* Opportunity to develop analysis and modelling skills using the range of 2D and 3D numerical analysis software packages available at AECOM
Qualifications
* A degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology/Geology, with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above
* An MSc/MEng in Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology would be an advantage (essential for candidates holding a BSc in Geology)
* Competent use of Microsoft Office; competency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D desirable
* Geotechnical work experience preferred, but not essential
* Willingness to work towards professional qualifications (through ICE, IOM3 or The Geological Society)
* Demonstrable interest in geotechnical projects and in promoting geotechnical activities with clients
* Flexibility to work away from home on sites and occasionally in other offices
* Motivation to meet client and business expectations and consider wider financial and commercial implications of actions
* Effective communicator with colleagues, internal and external clients, both verbally and in writing
* Capability to structure and prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole
* Ability to work independently without losing initiative and focus

All Ground Engineering Graduates are enrolled in GEO Grounding, our in‑house technical training academy, focusing on modules such as Desk Study, Geological Interpretation and Geomorphology, Ground Investigation (Design and Site Supervision), Ground Model Development, Parametric Assessment and Geotechnical Design. Modules include post‑discussion workshops.
