Summary of Position
The Head of Software Engineering leads all engineering teams (software architects, developers, testers), ensuring timely and quality technical delivery aligned with business goals. Responsibilities include managing hiring, setting and controlling standards (e.g., Definition of Ready, Definition of Done, unit test coverage, coding standards), overseeing architecture, and ensuring on-time project delivery.
This role involves mentoring engineers and testers, defining technical strategy, coordinating with product and leadership teams, and guiding tooling, scalability, and performance decisions. Collaboration with product management and operations/support teams is essential. Contributions to DevOps practices and evaluating service deployment strategies are also key.
The Head of Software Engineering focuses on people leadership, setting long-term platform evolution aligned with company strategy. The role reports to the IT Solution Program Director.
Key Responsibilities
* Align engineering priorities with business strategy, client needs, and regulatory requirements, considering ISO 17025, GxP, and other standards.
* Manage and mentor technical leads, fostering a culture of ownership, results, and innovation.
* Define and review software development standards, including coding, CI/CD, and testing practices.
* Develop testing strategies for defect detection, automation, and performance testing.
* Oversee technical architecture and platform evolution.
* Lead hiring, performance management, and team development.
* Set goals for delivery timelines, quality, and system reliability.
* Create efficient pipelines for rapid delivery using modern infrastructure technologies.
* Implement proactive production monitoring and cost-efficient alerting solutions.
* Lead engineering ceremonies such as retrospectives and planning.
* Report on delivery metrics, technical risks, and progress to leadership.
Performance metrics include code quality, team output, lead time, and management’s ability to audit and improve processes.
Technologies Involved
Strong knowledge of:
* Delphi, PL/SQL, Java
* Client/Server Technologies
* Angular and similar frameworks
* Development tools like Azure DevOps, GitHub, SonarQube, Artifactory
* Unit testing frameworks such as NUnit, MsTest
* Solid principles, design patterns
* Hosting on AWS
* UML, OOP, service-oriented and microservice architectures
Skills & Experience Requirements
Candidates should have:
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
* Mandatory professional software development experience post-degree
* 8+ years in software engineering and leadership, with experience scaling teams remotely across regions
* Deep understanding of IT architectures, design patterns, and delivering large-scale software
* Experience with multi-tenant architectures, versioning, and client-specific customizations
* Ability to align technical delivery with business goals, including client engagement and roadmap management
* Leadership skills in managing people and performance, with familiarity in Lean, Six Sigma, or Value Stream Mapping
* Experience with budgeting, hiring, and resource planning
* Expertise in code reviews, tooling, QA standards, and process reengineering
* Familiarity with Agile, DevOps, and cross-functional collaboration
* Strong stakeholder and leadership communication skills
