Portiuncula University Hospital is a Model 3 hospital providing 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine, and critical care, along with Emergency Department and maternity services to adults and children in the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon, and Offaly. The hospital has natural referral pathways to the Midlands, particularly for patients referred via the Emergency Department and discharged back for appropriate care, e.g., orthopaedics, elderly care.

- Portiuncula University Hospital is advertising for the role of Senior House Officer in our General Medicine Department for the July 2025 rotation.
- Candidates must have active Irish Medical Council Registration. Previous experience in Ireland is desirable.
- Candidates must have relevant experience for the role.
- Portiuncula University Hospital comprises 194 beds, with plans for a new 50-bed ward opening in August 2024. The hospital offers 24/7 acute surgery, medicine, critical care, paediatrics, obstetrics, and gynaecology, along with a busy Emergency Department with 30,283 attendances in 2023. It serves the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon, and Offaly, with natural referral pathways to the Midlands.
Location and Community
Ballinasloe, the largest town in County Galway, offers excellent schools, proximity to the University of Galway and the Technology University of Shannon in Athlone, and good public transport links. The area provides numerous sports, leisure, and entertainment facilities, with easy access to Galway City.
Education & Training
Portiuncula University Hospital is a recognized training site for undergraduate medical students from the University of Galway and graduate entry students from the University of Limerick. It is accredited for intern training under the West North West Intern Training program and offers Basic Specialist Training in General Medicine for Senior House Officers on the RCPI program, as well as GP training through the ICGP West scheme. The hospital hosts international trainees on the CPSP program via RCPI and has Basic and Higher Specialist trainees in Surgery, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. There is structured weekly teaching, MRCP exam preparation, advanced clinical skills training, and simulation-based education for managing deteriorating patients.
