Overview of Role
The CNMI is a key member of the point‑of‑care team and leads the clinical management of the Ambulatory Day Ward, a 29‑bedded unit specialising in a range of day‑case procedures in general surgery and diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy, dental, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, urology and general surgery. The CNMI upholds UPMC values, ensuring accessible, world‑class care that puts patients first while collaborating with the CNMII and the inter‑professional team to ensure efficient admission, pre‑and post‑operative care, transfer and discharge.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Assist the CNMII to provide patient care, ensuring the highest professional standards using an evidence‑based, care‑planning approach.
* Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership to the point‑of‑care staff.
* Co‑ordinate, assess, plan, deliver and review service‑user care by all staff in the designated area.
* Deliver safe, comprehensive nursing care within NMBI guidelines.
* Collaborate with service users, family, carers and other staff in treatment and care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care, personally involving and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.
* Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital quality systems.
* Develop and promote good relationships with patients and carers.
* Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department.
* Ensure all staff are familiar with the use and care of all equipment and that such equipment is maintained in good working condition.
* Ensure strict confidentiality of patient information.
* Implement HR policies to maintain the safety and well‑being of patients, relatives and staff.
* Ensure statutory rules, guidelines and legislation are understood and complied with.
* Assist the CNMII with ensuring that all staff have completed mandatory training for the year.
* Participate in the development of evidence‑based practice and unit audits.
* Monitor incident occurrence with the CNM2 and ensure patient satisfaction surveys are completed.
* Maintain the Quality Board and contribute to nursing governance committees and specialty user groups.
* Lead on practice development and support the CNMII in implementing change using lean methodology.
* Assist with workforce planning, roster and bed management for the clinical area.
* Manage resources efficiently, support policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
* Support the CNMII and deputise in his/her absence when required.
* Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered in the General Division of the NMBI live Register of Nurses.
* Minimum of three years’ experience as a staff nurse in an acute hospital setting.
* Functionally able to discharge the responsibilities of the role as outlined in this specification.
Desirable
* At least one year of experience in a management position in a surgical setting.
* Completion of a recognised post‑registration course in nurse management.
* Lean Six Sigma qualification or willingness to participate and complete this course.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Understanding of UPMC Whitfield and UPMC Ireland core values.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Awareness of UPMC Ireland HR policies and procedures.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft packages.
* Ability to develop, lead and complete projects within the continuous improvement programme using Lean methodology.
