Offer Description

Integrated Sensing and Communication using Advanced Antenna Technologies for Future Wireless Networks
The sixth generation (6G) wireless network is envisioned to be a "perceptive network" in which accurate sensing of the environment will complement high-performance communication. It will therefore support a wide variety of new applications and services which require both highly accurate sensing and localization as well as high-data-rate and low-latency communication, including immersive telepresence, smart cities and homes, connected autonomous vehicles, remote healthcare, and industrial Internet-of-Things (IoT). A key paradigm required to achieve this goal is that of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), whereby the hardware, spectrum and signal processing resources can be shared between wireless communication and wireless sensing functionalities; this can provide unprecedented gains in spectral efficiency, power consumption, and overall system size and cost. A promising means of achieving such performance gains is to utilize advanced antenna technologies (i.e., very large antenna arrays with adaptive configuration, encompassing flexible-position antenna systems as well as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces or RISs), which have the potential to provide higher capacity, better coverage, more precise sensing/localization, and/or enhanced security in ISAC. This project will address some of the key challenges required to enhance the performance of ISAC systems using advanced antenna technologies. The research will center on intelligent configuration of the flexible antennas and/or RIS for achieving an optimal sensing-communication trade-off in ISAC, incorporation of practical channel and hardware models, minimizing the required training overhead for channel estimation, and development of the relevant signal processing algorithms. The new ISAC system designs will be validated by extensive mathematical analysis as well as by simulation.

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
In this role you will be a part of the Research Ireland CONNECT Centre for Future Networks and Communications, which will provide further opportunities for collaboration, industry engagement, and building your research network.

• Excellent Communication Skills (Oral, Written, Presentation etc)
• Excellent Organisational and Administrative skills including a proven ability to work to deadlines.
• Candidates must demonstrate an awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion agenda.

The PD1 position is intended for early-stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time
