Staff Nurse Orthopedics – UPMC Whitfield

Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital
Job type: Fixed Term (11‑month)


Overview

UPMC Whitfield Hospital is recruiting a Staff Nurse Orthopaedics to provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care within a multidisciplinary team. The role involves developing specialist knowledge and contributing to innovative, evidence‑based practice on an 11‑month fixed term.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

* Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
* Act as preceptor to preregistration students, mentor new clinical staff, and guide non‑clinical colleagues as needed.
* Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nursing education departments to maintain UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
* Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Support the unit manager by meeting agreed responsibilities set out by the Unit Manager or Director of Nursing.
* Identify and discuss nursing and patient needs with consultants, the nursing team, multidisciplinary team, patients and carers.
* Accept responsibility and be accountable for the holistic care of a named group of patients on a shift basis.
* Maintain the highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety at all times.
* Act as patient advocate, providing emotional and psychological support to patients admitted to the unit.
* Have an understanding of the principles and workings of pre‑assessment.
* Maintain high standards of written and verbal communication; keep current with all NMBI publications including the Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.
* Maintain own professional registration and submit to HR for yearly verification.
* Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of the following and practice within the guidelines and policies written at both unit and hospital levels:
o Clinical risk reporting policy
o Occupational Health
o Facilities Management
o Patient Moving and Handling
o Resuscitation / Basic Life Support
o Health and Safety
o Departmental Financial & Budgetary Controls
* Ensure competence in reporting Hospital Risk and all Health and Safety concerns.
* Understand and participate in projects within the hospital.
* Undertake a proactive approach to achieve and maintain accreditation standards and have an in‑depth knowledge of departmental and hospital‑wide policies.


Quality & Audit

* Participate and lead clinical audit and research activity within the field, promoting evidence‑based practice.
* Undertake research/cl incal audit, critically analyse and provide written reports.
* Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
* Work closely with the Quality and Patient Safety team to ensure the department meets accreditation standards.


Health and Safety

* Uphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital policies in Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety, and Health and Safety at work regulations.
* Identify potential risks for staff, patients and visitors and adhere to incident reporting procedures.
* Observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and well‑being of self, colleagues, visitors and patients.


Professional / Education

* Develop skills required to act as shift co‑ordinator / Team Leader, including workload assessment and allocation.
* Manage workload to ensure patient care needs are met and colleagues can take allocated breaks.
* Be responsible for the care, control, storage and administration of drugs according to clinic and statutory guidelines and NMBI medication management.
* Develop appropriate IT skills to work efficiently in a clinical environment.
* Use Isoft and other IT systems on the patient pathway.
* Liaise with consultants regarding patient care and bed allocation.
* Continually risk‑assess the theatre environment for safety of patients, relatives and staff; report incidents per UPMC Whitfield Hospital guidelines.
* Practice and demonstrate research‑based nursing care, maintaining professional development.
* Undertake specific training required (equipment, specialist medication administration).
* Maintain confidentiality of all information, adhering to GDPR legislation.
* Liaise with the Scheduling Team about patient bed and theatre slot allocation.


Qualifications & Experience

* Registered General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
* Orthopaedic and/or General Inpatient Ward experience is essential.
* Paediatric experience is desirable.
* Evidence of ongoing CPD.
