About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their expanding engineering team within a fast‑growing automation and special‑purpose machine‑building environment. This role is central to delivering innovative machinery used in filling, packaging, and advanced automated manufacturing.
The successful candidate will contribute to R&D, concept development, detailed mechanical design, and risk assessment while ensuring all design output meets regulatory, legislative, and user requirements. This position requires strong technical ability as well as a methodical, collaborative approach to engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Technical Execution
Lead the creation of detailed mechanical designs for special‑purpose machinery.
Support R&D and concept development, producing innovative solutions for complex challenges.
Conduct internal and external design reviews and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Implement and manage the Product Data Management (PDM) system.
Stay informed on emerging technologies and best practices in machine design and automation.
Quality, Compliance & Risk Management
Produce designs that meet all User, Regulatory, and Legislative Requirements.
Conduct machine risk assessments and implement safety strategies.
Ensure GMP‑compliant designs that prioritise usability, maintainability, repeatability, and efficiency.
Identify, assess, and mitigate risks throughout the design lifecycle.
Ensure design work complies with CE marking requirements using approved templates.
Project Collaboration & Workflow
Collaborate closely with project managers, assembly teams, customers, and the wider engineering function.
Plan and prioritise design work using approved project methodologies and workflows.
Support continuous improvement activities within the design department.
Monitor and report on design project status and deliverables.
Provide technical and pricing input to the Sales & Marketing team.
Customer & Team Engagement
Maintain strong customer relationships throughout the design process and post‑installation.
Work alongside multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless transfer from design to production and commissioning.
Support mentoring and guidance for junior engineers where required.
Skills & Experience
Essential
Minimum 5 years experience in a senior mechanical design role within the special‑purpose automation industry.
Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modelling (SolidWorks preferred).
Proven ability to design mechanisms and integrate advanced technologies reliably.
Experience sizing mechanical systems for lifecycle performance.
Strong understanding of safety requirements and risk assessment methodologies.
Highly organised with excellent task prioritisation and time management.
Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills.
Professional, detail‑oriented, collaborative, and committed to engineering excellence.
Desirable
Experience with CE marking, GMP requirements, and machine safety documentation.
Background in filling, packaging, assembly automation, or other specialised machinery sectors.
