Key Responsibilities

Plan and initiate care and treatment modalities within agreed protocols to achieve patient‑centred outcomes and evaluate their effectiveness.
Utilise assessment skills and techniques to determine each patient/family’s needs.
Plan all care in collaboration with the patient.
Provide specialist advice to patients on appropriate products to meet their needs.
Liaise as appropriate with other members of the multidisciplinary team regarding any aspect of patient care.
Develop, document and update care, discharge and teaching plans and documentation as necessary.
Evaluate the care/information given and reassess accordingly.
Co‑ordinate and track the completion of the patient‑reported outcome measures (PROMS) at the pre‑ and post‑operative assessments, review the patient post‑operatively at 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years and 20 years and record any complications in accordance with the Irish National Orthopaedic Register (INOR) template.
The Orthopaedic CNS will liaise with the consultant surgeon on abnormal clinical issues to identify and manage patients better.
Monitor and review data input from the hospital, facilitating multidisciplinary clinical audit, research, and best‑practice development.
Attend to the routine calls from patients via a telephone helpline, providing timely specialist advice or consultation as appropriate.
Provide support for the ward staff in managing the care of this patient on the day of admission or discharge.
Lead the establishment of a joint school, obtaining informed consent from the patient at the pre‑operative assessment clinic for the INOR register.
Enter PROMs at pre‑operative clinic and post‑operative nurse‑led clinics at specified intervals.
Schedule interdisciplinary referrals as required.
Run reports as requested by consultants or hospital leadership.
Improve patient satisfaction with the service and outcomes through education and health promotion.
Attend ward rounds and clinics as required.
Provide patients/carers with advice, support and reassurance via telephone calls.
Maintain effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, colleagues, personnel, patients and their relatives/carers.
Complete and maintain relevant documentation accurately.
Use a patient‑centred approach in all aspects of practice, ascertaining their views on aspects of care.
Influence practice and promote improved/new standards of care for patients.
Respect the dignity and confidentiality of patients, serving as their advocate when necessary.
Develop and deliver a comprehensive education programme in Orthopaedic nursing.
Maintain clinical, nursing and managerial competence, keeping up to date with relevant research.
Identify personal training development needs with the line manager, ensuring continuous professional development.
Provide professional, clinical and education advice to nursing and other healthcare staff.
Assist with orientation and induction of new staff and assess competency of student nurses on placement.
Participate in in‑service education and take responsibility for personal professional development.
Identify areas where scope of practice can be advanced and provide mentorship, pre‑ceptorship, teaching, facilitation and supervisory skills for nurses and other health‑care workers.
Plan and deliver staff teaching in relation to the individual setting.
Maintain and update a personal development portfolio; audit, research and quality activities.
Identify, critically analyse, disseminate and integrate nursing evidence into Orthopaedic nursing practice.
Establish, implement and evaluate audit programmes, contributing to service planning through audit data.
Record patient information electronically, providing data for auditing.
Monitor, access, utilize and disseminate current research to advise informed evidence‑based practice in Orthopaedic nursing.
Ensure compliance with Hermitage Clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislation.
Encourage continuous review and evaluation of policies, guidelines and existing practices through audits.
Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement, encouraging innovation within the department.
Set and monitor core objectives, standards and key performance indicators for the service.
Lead on requirements of the hospital’s accreditation process.
Participate in the hospital's risk management programme.
Promote delivery of high standard of care to all patients.
Develop a culture of safety, promoting positive reporting of incidents and near misses.
Identify and develop key performance indicators (KPIs) congruent with Orthopaedic service and hospital performance.
Develop action plans to address KPI targets.
Act as a leader in clinical practice, providing role‑modeling to staff nurses in acute services or community settings.

Qualifications / Experience

Registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by NMBI.
At least five years recent relevant post‑registration nursing experience (full‑time or equivalent part‑time) in an acute hospital setting and a minimum of two years nursing experience in Orthopaedic Nursing.
Acquired a Level 8 post‑registration Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) major academic award relevant to Orthopaedic Nursing (or similar).
