Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a1½-year,full-time,fixed term position as aPostdoctoral Researcher/Research Associatewith Discipline of Civil Engineering at the University of Galway, Ireland.
This position is funded bythe Marine Instituteand is available from1stJuly 2026to contract end date of31stDecember 2027.
The project isseekinga highly qualified and ambitious candidate to undertake an 18-month fixed term postdoctoral research project aimed at enhancing our understanding of coastal and ocean-based nature-based solutions(NbS)for coastal protectionin Ireland. The project will focus onnumerical modelling of ocean-basedNbSandhabitat suitability mappingusing GIS.The modelling will involve coupled wave and coastal morphology modelling to simulate the wave energy dissipation potential of marine vegetation.The habitat suitability mappingwill be achieved bydevelopinga GISsystem usingall relevant databases available in Ireland to supportNbSfeasibility projects, including historic maps of ocean-basedNbSecosystem extent (e.g., oyster reefs, seagrass meadows, kelp forests) and data on the important factors (essential and/or desirable) to consider in site selection for restoration projects. The position is funded bythe IrishMarine Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme grant. The researcher will work closely withDr. Stephen Nash(Civil Engineering)andDr. Eugene Farrell(Geography). Salary:Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associatesalary scale€46,805- €59,654per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on thepayscale(subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted indeterminingplacement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
