Experienced Gardener

The Estate Inchydoney House is one of West Cork's most significant historic properties. Set across 33 secluded acres and benefiting from a unique Gulf Stream microclimate, the estate is home to a multitude of botanical specimens and a meticulously restored 2-acre walled garden.

Our grounds are a diverse horticultural tapestry, including:

* Productive Gardens: Fruit, vegetable, and flower production.
* Ornamental Landscapes: Italian garden, rose garden, lawns, and exotic borders.
* Natural Habitats: Saltwater lagoon, woodlands, and wildflower meadows.
* Infrastructure: Extensive dry stone terracing, glasshouses, and cold frames.

The Role Reporting to the Head Gardener, you will play a vital role in the daily care and long-term evolution of these gardens. We are looking for someone who views gardening as a career. At Inchydoney House, we value collaboration and professional growth; we provide mentorship designed to help you transition into higher levels of responsibility as your skills flourish.

Key Responsibilities:

* Horticultural Care: Propagation (seeds, cuttings, layering), plant identification, and species-appropriate maintenance.
* Specialist Areas: Glasshouse management (hygiene, ventilation, pollination) and vegetable crop production from sowing to harvest.
* Estate & Habitat Management: Woodland and tree care, wildflower meadow management, and the conservation of swamp/lagoon biodiversity.
* Technical Operations: Soil management, mechanical cultivation, and plant protection (structural, cultural, and biological).
* Infrastructure & Safety: Maintenance of paths and buildings, tool care, and strict adherence to Health & Safety standards (hazard ID and risk control).

The Ideal Candidate

* Education: Minimum of QQI Level 5 (or equivalent) in Horticulture.
* Expertise: Strong plant identification skills and a deep understanding of varied horticultural practices.
* Values: A genuine commitment to wildlife-friendly and sustainable gardening.
* Attributes: Efficient time management, a sharp eye for detail, and excellent communication skills.
