Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed-term position as a Research Assistant Software Engineer in the School of Computer Science at the University of Galway. The work will be conducted under the direction of Prof. Michael Madden and Dr Ihsan Ullah. The position is available from 1st September 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 31st August 2027.

This position is funded by a Horizon Europe Project called BORDERLINK (Border Control Agencies for Interlinked and Interoperable Future), which seeks to overcome interoperability challenges in European customs and border control operations. To address this challenge, the project is innovating, developing, and testing technologies, reference databases, and standards for higher interoperability and interconnectivity. The project brings together 18 partners from across Europe, including universities, commercial organisations, and customs agencies. The project website is https://www.borderlink.eu/.
Salary: The post will be on the Research Assistant salary scale €32,962 - €42,943 per annum, subject to the project’s funding limitations, and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
