Job Details

Job Title: Associate Practitioner

Reports to: Chief Medical Scientist

Location: Histopathology Laboratory

Job Purpose: To participate in providing a quality service to the Pathology department. The position promotes and preserves the Bon Secours Mission, Values, and Ethos.


Role Details

Permanent full-time role, 35 hours per week, salary in line with experience (€36,239 to €48,209).


Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Perform routine laboratory scientific work according to policies, procedures, and guidelines.
2. Ensure quality work and adherence to departmental procedures.
3. Assist Medical Scientists and MLA staff with preparations.
4. Order tests via the laboratory information system.
5. Process samples for external tests and package them appropriately.
6. Receive, record, and match specimens and request forms.
7. Operate and maintain complex laboratory equipment safely.
8. Embed and microtome patient tissue (training provided).
9. Carry out biopsy transfer following training and competency assessment.
10. Tray-up patient slides following SOPs.
11. Recognize practice limits and refer to Medical Scientists as needed.
12. Participate in registration, custody, and stock management of reagents and consumables.
13. Record non-conformances, investigate, take corrective actions, and report findings.
14. Adhere to document control and record retention procedures.
15. Support compliance with ISO15189 and other standards, participate in quality control and assessment.
16. Participate in performance review and development systems.
17. Maintain quality standards and service delivery.
18. Perform additional duties as appropriate and contribute to post development.
19. Support the hospital’s accreditation efforts (JCI, ISO15189).
20. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (Blood Directive, Medical Devices Directives).
21. Complete assigned actions promptly, including non-conformances, change controls, and complaints.
22. Implement effective safety procedures for health and safety compliance.


Qualifications and Experience

* Essential: BSc in Biological Science, General Science, Biology, or equivalent.
* Desirable: Post-graduate studies in related fields.
* Experience: Previous laboratory experience; experience in an ISO15189-accredited lab and knowledge of histopathology terminology are advantageous.


Skills

* Initiative and teamwork skills.
* Good communication skills.
