Overview
The Underwriting Operations Manager plays a key role in ensuring the delivery of efficient, compliant, and high-quality operational and underwriting services across the business. Based in Dublin, this role combines operational oversight with technical underwriting responsibilities, including managing a UK-based Operations Team remotely and providing direct underwriting support to our EEA Class Underwriter.
The successful candidate will hold a defined level of underwriting authority, contributing to the underwriting and management of risks across the EEA, ensuring compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements. This role requires a strong blend of operational expertise, underwriting acumen, and people leadership, with occasional international travel.
What You'll Do
* Remotely manage the UK Operations Team, ensuring consistent performance, quality, and adherence to operational standards.
* Oversee day-to-day operational activities, workflow allocation, and process governance across the underwriting and operations functions.
* Promote collaboration between Dublin, UK, and other international teams, fostering alignment and efficiency.
* Support the EEA Class Underwriter in underwriting risks across the EEA, including risk assessment, pricing, terms and conditions, and policy issuance.
* Hold a delegated level of underwriting authority to review, approve, and bind risks within established limits and guidelines.
* Ensure all underwriting decisions and documentation comply with internal governance, underwriting strategy, and regulatory frameworks.
* Contribute to portfolio management activities, including performance monitoring, exposure analysis, and renewal reviews.
* Liaise with brokers, coverholders, and MGAs to facilitate smooth underwriting processes and maintain strong relationships.
* Participate in underwriting audits and peer reviews to uphold underwriting quality and consistency.
* Oversee the efficient delivery of operational services across multiple MGAs and lines of business.
* Manage the onboarding of new MGAs, ensuring operational readiness, process implementation, and compliance with agreed service standards.
* Take responsibility for the performance and service delivery of RSP, addressing operational or service issues proactively.
* Maintain oversight of credit control and agency management activities, ensuring timely collections and compliance with financial controls.
* Collaborate with outsourced service partners to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality service delivery, including offshoring opportunities.
* Review and maintain process documentation, identifying areas for continuous improvement and automation.
* Uphold strong governance, control, and compliance standards across underwriting and operations functions.
* Support the implementation of operational and underwriting controls that align with business and regulatory requirements.
* Identify and lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, data quality, and service levels.
* Deliver training and guidance to team members and outsourced colleagues, ensuring consistency in underwriting and operational practices.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with MGAs, brokers, internal departments (Underwriting, Compliance, Finance), and external service providers.
* Act as the key liaison between underwriting, operations, and outsourced teams, ensuring effective communication and issue resolution.
* Participate in Service Review Meetings and MGA performance discussions, providing insights on both operational and underwriting performance.
* Occasional international travel (up to 25% of the role), including up to two annual trips to India, one trip to Washington, and trips to the UK as required.
Preferred Technical Skills
* A recognised insurance qualification that satisfies the Central Bank of Ireland's Minimum Competency Code (MCC) requirements (e.g., APA, CIP, or ACII).
* A minimum of 5 years underwriting experience
* Strong experience in insurance operations, ideally within an MGA, insurer, or delegated authority environment.
* Good understanding of insurance operational processes including credit control, reconciliation, and agency management.
* Experience coordinating work with outsourced or offshore service teams.
* Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
* Highly organised, detail-oriented, and proactive with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
* Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment with a focus on continuous improvement.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office and operational management systems.

*This is a remote position. Planned, in-office activities may be required on occasion (typically 2-4x per year).
