WWTP Shift Supervisor (Rostered Shift) — Cork
Arcadis is recruiting an experienced, rostered WWTP Shift Supervisor to join a leading pharmaceutical facility in Cork. This is a hands-on, shift-based supervisory role: you will lead and manage shift operators, own shift delivery end-to-end, and be the primary point of accountability for WWTP operations and compliance during your rostered hours. You will also manage external vendors for preventive maintenance and take responsibility for permitting activities.
Role summary
As Shift Supervisor you will ensure the safe, compliant and efficient operation of the wastewater treatment plant during your shift. You will supervise and coach shift operators, manage handovers and shift records, monitor and control operational parameters, lead incident response and corrective actions, and maintain licence and regulatory compliance. You will work closely with EHS/QA, maintenance and contractors to resolve operational issues, support audits and reporting, manage permitting activities and oversee vendors carrying out PMs.
Key responsibilities
* Lead shift operations: manage and mentor shift operators, conduct handovers, assign duties and make operational decisions.
* Act as back up for WWTP Lead as required
* Own compliance on shift: ensure adherence to EPA licence limits, GMP, SOPs and site standards; conduct JSAs and maintain compliance documentation.
* Monitor and optimise WWTP operations: oversee chemical dosing, filtration, aeration and other treatment processes to maintain plant performance and licence compliance.
* Incident management: respond to alarms and operational upsets, implement containment and corrective actions, and apply A3/root-cause problem solving.
* Vendor & contractor management: plan and supervise external vendors for PMs, coordinate contractor works, verify quality of execution and close-out documentation.
* Permitting responsibility: prepare/track permit submissions and renewals, ensure permit conditions are met and liaise with regulators as required.
* Permit-to-work & EHS systems: ensure accurate application of permit-to-work procedures, enforce EHS standards on shift and lead/support audits and inspections.
* Maintenance support: coordinate with maintenance teams, support troubleshooting of electrical and control systems, and manage WWTP spare parts, purchasing and deliveries.
* Inspections & audits: support regulatory inspections and internal audits, prepare records and ensure timely reporting.
* Record-keeping & continuous improvement: maintain accurate shift logs of performance, maintenance and compliance data; contribute to SOP development and process improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & experience
* Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Chemical Engineering, Natural Sciences, Wastewater Treatment or significant experience working within a WWTP without a 3rd level qualification
* Minimum 5 years' practical experience in wastewater or water treatment operations (industrial or municipal).
* Proven minimum 3 years in a supervisory/management role, ideally in a shift-based operations environment.
* Strong understanding and proven application of permit-to-work systems, EHS standards and audit processes.
* Practical knowledge of water treatment processes, operational controls and regulatory compliance.
* Experience supporting inspections, regulatory reporting and licence management.
Desirable
* Experience with SAP for asset and maintenance management.
* Certifications in water treatment operations (e.g., IWTO, EPA) an advantage.
* Project management experience.
