Lead Mechanical Engineer Major Power Generation Overhaul Daily Rate: Very attractive Start Date: December / January Contract Length: 12 months, expected to run until late 2027 Work Pattern: MondayFriday, 08:3016:45 A major power generation facility is preparing for a significant multi-year maintenance and upgrade programme and is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to oversee all mechanical elements of a high-value overhaul project. This large-scale programme includes 5-yearly major maintenance activities such as turbine generator works, mechanical refurbishment, plant inspections, upgrades across control and instrumentation systems, and a substantial balance-of-plant scope. The successful engineer will play a key role in managing contractors, driving safety and quality compliance, and ensuring successful delivery of all mechanical work packages. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage all mechanical work scopes during the overhaul programme. Oversee assigned EPC and mechanical contracts, ensuring they meet safety, schedule, quality, and commercial requirements. Work closely with project management, specialist engineering teams, and on-site maintenance personnel. Support the development and execution of Inspection & Test Plans for mechanical systems and components. Conduct regular safety, environmental, and quality audits throughout the project. Provide daily supervision of contractor activities, ensuring adherence to technical standards and project protocols. Manage project costs for mechanical workstreams, including tooling requirements. Lead the development of technical specifications for mechanical plant and equipment. Support tendering, procurement, and contractor management processes. Attend factory acceptance tests, supplier workshops, and technical inspections when required. Ensure mechanical drawings, procedures, and plant modification documentation are kept fully updated. Prepare Mechanical Close-Out Reports and contribute to overall project reporting. Skills & Experience Required Essential: Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience in the power generation industry. Strong track record of planning and delivering major plant overhauls or outages. Experience with pumps, motors, valves, turbines, mechanical plant, and associated systems. Proven experience in contractor management, procurement input, and oversight of complex engineering scopes. Excellent communication skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary project team. Strong reporting and documentation capability. Good IT skills and ability to work with technical project systems. Desirable: Experience working on hydro-electric or pumped-storage plant overhauls (strong advantage). Degree-level qualification (Level 8 or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Additional Requirements Must be able to work on-site full-time. Must hold up-to-date safety certifications (e.g., safe working, manual handling). Full PPE required (unbranded items provided except safety boots, gloves and eye protection).
