Overview of role
The Clinical Nurse Facilitator (CNF) works with the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer to develop a competency assessment framework and a continuous professional development strategy for peri‑operative nurses. The CNF is a key member of the nurse education team, creating a supportive clinical learning environment for post‑registration and undergraduate nurses, and ensuring compliance with best practice, JCI standards and the Quality & Safety programme.
Key Responsibilities
Facilitate education and continuous professional development within the operating department for Registered Nurses.
Delivery of education and training for peri‑operative nurses in alignment with UPMC’s competency framework.
Review education programmes to reflect national and international best practice standards.
Promote an environment of professional nursing practice consistent with UPMC’s mission, vision and values.
Ensure student‑nurse placement sites provide optimal teaching and learning environments that meet third‑level college and NMBI standards.
Develop, engage in and promote person‑centred nursing practices to enhance clinical effectiveness and patient outcomes.
Support change and play an active role in nursing and corporate development strategies that sustain innovations in the theatre department.
Management and Organisation
Support the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer and Theatre Managers with strategic and future development of peri‑operative nursing.
Provide professional leadership, facilitate staff team building and develop educational strategies for expert peri‑operative care.
Attend meetings with third‑level institutes regarding student affairs and placements.
Collaborate with theatre managers on quality issues and assist in quality assurance strategy and metrics.
Contribute to addressing practice issues and implement remedial actions as appropriate.
Develop and implement systems for quality improvement, monitoring and audit mechanisms.
Support surgical teams in formulating evidence‑based policies, protocols and procedures.
Maintain the online database of approved nursing policies, protocols and procedures.
Demonstrate planning, organisational and initiative skills; motivate self and others.
Support the profession and encourage ongoing professional development of nursing staff.
Communication and Interprofessional Working
Foster good working relationships and maintain a high professional standard within the theatre department.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to review policies, procedures and protocols that reflect evidence‑based practice.
Demonstrate effective written and presentation skills, including PowerPoint and Teams.
Innovate using various online educational platforms to facilitate inclusive training.
Education and Training
Assist the ACNO in developing and implementing educational frameworks for clinical pathways.
Participate in clinical learning environment audits for undergraduate programmes.
Assist with design, delivery and accreditation of NMBI foundation and skills programmes.
Assist with design and delivery of education programmes for healthcare assistants in collaboration with Directors of Nursing and Clinical Nurse Managers.
Identify and participate in activities that enhance personal professional development.
Support staff in applying codes and policies of practice such as the Scope of Practice Framework and the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics.
Audit/Research
Assist with formulation of policies, protocols and procedures to ensure high standards of peri‑operative care.
Provide accurate audit reports to the Director of Nursing, supporting quality improvement.
Support nursing staff in conducting internal and local audit processes.
Professional/Personal Development
Keep updated with nursing literature, research and new developments in practice, management and education.
Accreditation
Familiarise with policies, procedures and guidelines in clinical care and area.
Assist in reviewing policies, procedures and guidelines under department lead direction.
Lean
Lead, facilitate and participate in lean projects across disciplines and departments.
Problem‑solve and continuously improve using lean tools and techniques.
Attend on‑site lean training as required.
Personnel
Follow uniform policy reference.
General
Work may be required in other hospital areas as needed.
Produce satisfactory documentary evidence of all training and experience claimed.
Respect the organisational values of the Hospital.
Quality & Safety – Safe Culture
Actively participate in quality and safety activities throughout the working day.
Plan, monitor, analyse and improve quality programmes with line manager.
Participate in developing performance indicators in partnership with department manager and business objectives.
Initiate, participate in and evaluate audits according to JCI, hospital policy and lean requirements.
Health & Safety
Take reasonable care to protect own safety, health and welfare and that of others.
Co‑operate with UPMC, report dangerous situations and comply with policies.
Attend annual education sessions on Fire Health & Safety.

Qualifications
Registered nurse on the Nurses and Midwives Board of Ireland register.
Relevant postgraduate award at level 8/9 or higher, or pursuit of same.
Master’s degree in education or pursuing same.
Experience
At least 5 years post‑registration nursing experience, including a minimum of two years in a peri‑operative setting.

Salary
€62,077.17‑€76,158.63 per annum based on a 37.5‑hour work week.
