About the post:

RCSI's new public health gallery is a flagship public engagement facility located in 118 St Stephen's Green, a striking new building which writes the latest chapter of our historic story in the heart of Dublin. Due for completion in late 2025, 118 St Stephen's Green is an 8-storey €95 million project that will transform and enrich students' learning experience and provide vital infrastructure for our pioneering health-sciences research and innovation. In the entrance foyer of the building, with views onto St Stephen's Green, the gallery is RCSI's first purpose-built public space, welcoming people in to join a shared culture of learning, innovation and creativity. Through a rolling programme of exhibitions, events and online activities, the gallery will be a place for everyone to join conversations about living longer, healthier and happier lives.

Exhibitions Officer

As Exhibitions Officer, you will play a crucial role in a small team, developing exhibitions and events that appeal to a variety of audiences. You will have a particular focus on researching and developing content which reflects the latest understanding in contemporary health sciences and medicine, informed by RSCI research.

Job Responsibilities

§ Researching content for exhibitions and events focused on contemporary health sciences and medicine

§ Identifying exhibition display assets (e.g. objects, imagery, AV, artworks) and arranging loans and licensing of these

§ With the guidance of the Gallery Director and Gallery Production Manager, creating interpretation plans and scripts for exhibitions

§ With the guidance of the Gallery Digital Content Producer, creating briefs and scripts for digital exhibits and online content

§ Ensuring that the content of exhibitions and events is appropriate and appealing for target audiences

§ Facilitating events and workshops

§ Contributing to evaluation (formative and summative) of exhibitions and events

§ Liaising with experts in RCSI and beyond

§ Liaising with representatives of patient and public groups

§ Under the guidance of the Gallery Production manager, support the installation and de-installation of exhibitions and events

§ Acting as an ambassador for the Gallery and Public Engagement activities in RCSI and externally.

§ Undertaking other appropriate duties as assigned by the Gallery Director or nominee

§ Complying with statutory legislation and gallery rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff and student welfare and safety

§ Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required

§ Representing the best interests of the Gallery/RCSI at all times

Knowledge & Experience – (Essential):

§ A qualification, or equivalent experience, in a relevant field; for example, health communication, science communication, education, journalism, museum studies, STEM disciplines

§ A demonstrable interest in science and medicine

§ Experience of communicating complex ideas and technical content for general audiences

§ Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to distil large volumes of information into clear, concise messages

§ Excellent research, fact-checking and documentation skills

§ Experience of working collaboratively with others to develop and deliver projects, activities or events

§ An appreciation of the public engagement with research agenda in contemporary health sciences and medicine

Desirable Skills

§ Experience of working in cultural organisations or visitor attractions, preferably with a focus on STEM or public engagement with STEM

§ Experience of developing content for exhibitions

§ Knowledge and understanding of good practice in creating accessible and inclusive experiences in line with Universal Design and EDI principles

This role will occasionally require out-of-hours and weekend work.

This job description is an outline of the duties for the role. Details may change over time once the gallery has opened to the public and we assess ongoing operational and programming plans to best serve our audiences.

The role is based at RCSI at St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2. We operate a hybrid working policy but please note that during certain periods, for example exhibition install and decant, full-time attendance onsite is likely to be required.

Travel within Ireland and internationally may be required as necessary.
