Overview of role:
We are recruiting for a Staff Nurse Inpatients General 11 month Fixed Term Contract at UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
Responsibilities
Clinical: Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
Act as preceptor to preregistration students, mentor new clinical staff and new nonclinical staff.
Support and guide all colleagues when needed.
Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments to maintain UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure good team spirit and collaborative working practices.
Support the unit manager by meeting agreed responsibilities as set out by the Unit Manager or the Director of Nursing at any time.
Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with consultants/nursing team, multidisciplinary team, patients, and carers.
Accept responsibility and be accountable for the holistic care of a named group of patients on a shift basis.
Ensure the highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety are maintained at all times.
Demonstrate and promote a patient-centred style of clinical practice, acting as patient advocate and providing emotional and psychological support to patients admitted to the unit for treatment.
Understand the principles and workings of pre-assessment.
Maintain high standards of communication, both written and verbal.
Have a working knowledge of NMBI publications including the Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.
Maintain own professional registration and submit to HR for verification yearly.
Develop and maintain knowledge of policies at unit and hospital level: Clinical risk reporting, Occupational Health, Facilities Management, Patient Moving and Handling, Resuscitation / Basic Life Support, Health and Safety.
Departmental Financial & Budgetary Controls; report Clinic Risk and Health & Safety concerns as part of responsibilities.
Understand and participate in hospital projects and accreditation processes.
Proactively contribute to achieving and maintaining accreditation standards and know departmental and hospital-wide policies.
Quality & Audit
Participate and lead clinical audits and research activity, promoting evidence-based practice.
Undertake research/clinical audit as necessary and provide written reports.
Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
Collaborate with the Quality and Patient Safety team to ensure the department meets accreditation standards.
Health and Safety
Uphold hospital policy requirements related to Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety and Health and Safety at work regulations.
Identify potential risks for staff, patients and visitors and follow incident reporting procedures.
Observe a general duty of care for health, safety and well-being of staff, patients and visitors, and manage risks accordingly.
Professional / Education
Develop the skills to act as shift co-ordinator / Team Leader, including workload assessment and allocation to maintain patient and staff safety.
Manage workload to ensure patient care needs are met and breaks are taken as allocated.
Be responsible for the care, control, storage and administration of drugs in line with clinic and statutory guidelines and NMBI.
Develop IT skills to work efficiently within the clinical environment and have working knowledge of IT systems (e.g., Isoft) on the patient pathway.
Liaise with consultants regarding patient care and bed allocation.
Continually risk assess the theatre environment to ensure safety; report accidents, incidents or complaints per hospital guidelines.
Practice and demonstrate research-based nursing care and maintain ongoing professional development.
Undertake training required for the role (e.g., equipment use, administration of specialist medication).
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to GDPR requirements.
Liaise with Scheduling re patient beds and theatre slots.
Qualifications & Experience
Be registered in the General Division of the live NMBI register and maintain annual registration.
Basic Life Support Certification.
A minimum of one year's post-registration experience.
Eligible to be assigned to any ward area within scope of practice (Surgical, Medical, Recovery, Day Ward).
Attend mandatory education sessions in a timely manner.
Maintain a professional portfolio and reflect positively on the nursing profession and Aut Even Hospital.
Able to respond quickly to urgent matters.
