Job Description/ Job Title: Health Care Assistant
Reporting Relationship: Nurse Manager
Western Alzheimers Claregalway Day Care Centre, Claregalway, is currently recruiting for a Health Care Assistant, working 30 hours per week. This is a permanent contract of employment.
Western Alzheimers works across counties Galway, Mayo & Roscommon in the heart of local communities providing dementia specific services and supports and advocating for the rights and needs of all people living with dementia and their carers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing person centred care to people with dementia in the Day Care Centre. You will need good communication and organizational skills and be able to work on your own initiative. To be successful in this role you will need experience of working with people with dementia, older people or people with intellectual disabilities.
Purpose of the Post
To assist in the provision and delivery of care at the highest level thus ensuring the welfare of service users and acknowledging their rights to dignity and privacy.
Roles and Responsibilities
* Assist in delivering a high standard of holistic care to service user, promoting their equality and dignity at all times.
* To carry out all assigned and delegated tasks involving all activities of daily living under the direction and supervision of the Nurse Manager.
* Act as the named carer for specific residents as allocated by the Nurse on Duty.
* Respect privacy and dignity of all service user and promote their independence.
* Report immediately any incident or potential incident which may compromise the health, safety and welfare of service user or visitors.
* Communicate with all service users and their family/friends. Ensure that all are welcomed and offered refreshments.
* Contribute to the serving of service users meals, assisting service users to eat and drink as required.
* Comply with all policies and procedures relevant to job role including those that incorporate health and safety, infection control and waste disposal.
* Be willing to achieve FETAC / QQI Level 5 Major Award in Health Care and undertake appointed on-going training.
* To undertake other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Nurse Manager.
* Be aware of the confidential nature of the work and in particular, the right of residents to confidentiality. To this end you will not discuss workings of Western Alzheimers or its residents with any third party outside of the organisation.
Essential:
* QQI Level 5 modules in Care of the Elderly and Care Skills
* Previous experience of working with people with dementia, older people or people with intellectual disabilities.
Core Aptitudes:
* Must be of the caring nature, sympathetic to the needs of all the residents.
* Have good communication and interpersonal skills.
