Senior Clinical Engineer - UPMC Kilkenny

Overview
The Clinical Engineering Department is responsible for patient-related hospital equipment services, support and medical device repairs.
The service works with other healthcare departments and advances patient care by applying clinical engineering and equipment management skills to healthcare technology.
In this role you will work as part of a dynamic team to deliver enhanced technical support to clinical services and to manage medical systems integration and Clinical Information Systems.
This includes collaborating with IT and cybersecurity teams to ensure compliance with UPMC standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Provide maintenance services for electro-medical equipment, ensuring safety, accuracy and reliability consistent with professional standards.
Follow and develop maintenance procedures to keep equipment operating according to manufacturer's specifications.
Diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic and IT problems associated with medical devices and respond to faults and breakdowns to maximize uptime.
Assist with the coordination and implementation of preventative maintenance schedules and safety programmes.
Assist with equipment acceptance testing and commissioning in line with department standards.
Participate in the use of the designated Computerised Equipment Management System to maintain inventory and records of equipment-related interactions.
Audit medical equipment across UPMC facilities and report recommendations regarding life expectancy or replacement.
Track the status of equipment repairs, communicating progress and return-to-service dates to stakeholders.
Support medical, nursing, paramedical and health-and-social-care professionals (HSCPs) in the application of medical device technology for patient care.
Ensure devices considered for procurement are CE marked, comply with EU medical-device regulation and meet UPMC policies.
Liaise with clinical staff to schedule preventative maintenance and respond to notices from HPRA in accordance with UPMC policies.
Attend mandatory hospital training and participate in accreditation programmes.
Take responsibility for tools and equipment, ensuring testing equipment is calibrated when required.
Perform scheduled department stock takes and liaise with suppliers to maintain parts and consumables inventory.
Prepare equipment specifications and cost estimates for potential project options.
Manage external contractors and ensure compliance with hospital procedures.
Co-operate fully with Health and Safety requirements and regulations.
Attend manufacturer's training courses when requested.
Travel to other UPMC sites to perform assigned duties when required.
Be flexible with working hours to meet hospital and department targets.
Develop and maintain good cooperation and communications throughout the hospital.
Liaise as needed with IT personnel to ensure appropriate IT infrastructure for medical equipment.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Clinical Engineering.
Develop areas of specialism within health technology, leading cross-service liaison with other departments.
Act as team lead and assist in day-to-day management of the Clinical Engineering service where required.
Essential Qualifications
Recognised qualification at Quality and Qualifications Ireland, Level 8 or higher, in one of the following disciplines: Electronic, Electrical, Instrument Physics, Industrial Instrumentation, Applied Physics, Mechanical, Mechatronic, Biomedical Engineering.
Minimum of three years relevant hospital or industry experience.
Full clean Irish/EU driving licence with own transport.
Membership of BEAI or eligibility for membership.
Personal Requirements
Good problem-solving skills and ability to develop solutions for complex medical equipment situations.
Strong engagement and communication skills with multidisciplinary teams.
Ability to gather, interpret and analyse information to make informed decisions.
Strong fault-finding skills for complex electro-medical equipment.
Ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Email and internet knowledge.
Maintain an awareness of patient primacy in all hospital activities and a commitment to continual professional development.
Desirable Requirements
Clinical Engineering experience in Theatre, Critical Care, Endoscopy, Diagnostic Ultrasound or Medical Device Integration.
Salary
€64,****** – €85,****** per annum based on a 35-hour week.
