Job Title: Software Engineer I at Unum Technology Centre in Carlow

About the Role

1. We are seeking a skilled Software Engineer to design, implement and maintain new and existing features for our portfolio of applications.
2. You will work closely with key stakeholders to deliver features that meet business requirements.
3. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, coding, configuring, unit testing, maintaining and documenting software deliverables using agreed-upon standards and tools.
4. You will participate in sizing and estimation activities within the agile team and communicate daily with the Scrum Master or Team Lead on progress made and planned progress.
5. As a Software Engineer, you will also participate in code reviews and sprint retrospectives to ensure continuous improvement and share ideas for team improvement.
6. Your focus will be on delivering business priority and value at all times.
7. You will be responsible for ensuring the quality of existing and new features through manual and automated testing and use of continuous integration techniques.
8. We encourage our engineers to demonstrate an interest in software architectures and design solutions that align with company stated architecture and standards.
9. In addition, you may participate in Proof Of Concept work and prototyping when necessary.
10. You will collaborate with Business Analysts to confirm understanding of business requirements and help define requirements from a technical perspective.
11. Collaboration with User Experience (UX) designers is also essential to ensure designs can be translated into working solutions.
12. You will establish the definition of done for each stage of production within the team and collaborate with Test Engineers and Senior Test Engineers to ensure software meets the definition of done.
13. An innovation culture in the team is encouraged by continuous improvement of deliveries, and participation in evaluating new processes and technologies is expected.
14. You will transition software features to a production environment, ensuring they meet application performance criteria, release standards and ensure application and system stability.
15. Automating testing of software to industry standards is also required to ensure high-quality application/solution delivery and efficient regression of existing features.
16. Maintaining up-to-date Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools is essential, and participating in daily standups outlining progress made, progress planned and detailing impediments is also required.
17. Last but not least, thinking with the mind of the end customer at all times is crucial, as we strive to improve the customer experience and delight them.

About You

1. Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent relevant business experience is preferred.
2. You should have 2+ years experience with demonstrated success at the Associate level in software development and software development practices or equivalent experience.
3. Evidence of analytical ability and a logical approach to problem solving is required.
4. Candidates should pay close attention to detail and have good oral and written communication skills.
5. Knowledge of Agile Development Methodologies is essential, as well as being self-motivated and results-oriented.
6. Taking an innovative approach to problem solving and demonstrating strong focus on quality delivery and delighting customers is also required.
7. Able to work effectively within a team and more broadly with people from a variety of backgrounds and areas across the organization is also expected.
