This programme focusses on applying current OSH legislation and guidance in the development of best practice in OSH management and identifying core skills in managing OSH within an organisation.

At the end of the programme participants will be able to:
Advise management on OSH related issues relevant to the industry sector
Identify, interpret and advise on key requirements of Irish OSH legislation, codes of practice and published guidance
Carry out OSH risk assessments in collaboration with relevant stakeholders; Identify workplace hazards and assess associated potential risks in the workplace
Evaluate the effectiveness of existing risk control measures and identify additional measures to reduce risks
Advise on drafting relevant OSH policies and review existing OSH policies to ensure currency; Advise on drafting relevant Safe Work Procedures (SWP) and review existing SWPs to ensure effectiveness
Conduct periodic reviews of an organisation's OSH management system
Identify and review systems of reporting and investigating workplace accidents and recommendations for the prevention of reoccurrences.
Review the effectiveness of emergency planning systems in place with relevant competent persons
Identify effective methods of communication of relevant OSH information across various levels in an organisation
Identify the key OSH training, information and instruction programmes required by law ensuring compliance
This programme is for:
Individuals with a professional interest in, or currently involved in, the application or management of occupational safety and health (OSH) in the workplace.
To ensure the practical application of course content, it is essential that participants are in full-time or part-time employment.
The ability to relate theoretical knowledge to real-world workplace scenarios is a key component of the programme.
This Level 7 qualification is particularly suitable for those who already hold a Certificate in OSH or who have completed relevant training in this area.
Please note, as this is a professional-level qualification, participants are expected to demonstrate an academic standard of English.
This includes the ability to understand legal and technical documents, engage in critical analysis, and produce clear, well-structured written work.
Approach
A practical approach is used throughout the programme.
Where OSH law is introduced, it is applied to workplace situations through case studies, case law, group exercises and various activities.
Participants are encouraged to share and apply their industry knowledge and experience to workplace scenarios.
The programme facilitates participant discussion on the various OSH subjects as they arise throughout the course thus ensuring greater understanding and application of the subject matter.

Kieran holds a primary degree in Mechanical Engineering and Masters degree in both Engineering Design and Occupational Health & Safety Management.
He is a Chartered Engineer and a practising environmental safety and health professional.
He has over twenty years industry experience in senior environmental safety and health management roles.
Kieran has been training in the occupational safety and health programme for over 10 years and has introduced students to the concepts of health and safety management systems, risk assessment and considerations impacting their effective implementation.
Patricia is an experienced Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) consultant and corporate trainer with a strong background in chemical safety.
A qualified chemist and seasoned educator, she has worked extensively with the Ibec Academy and BioPharmaChemical Ireland (BPCI) to design and deliver accredited, bespoke, and short-form OSH training—particularly in the safe use of chemicals in the workplace.
Her deep knowledge of both the public and private sectors, combined with years of hands-on training experience, has shaped her applied, learner-centred approach.
Patricia is also an experienced lecturer and remains committed to integrating current best practice in teaching and learning into her training delivery.
Darrell, a qualified electrician and electronics service technician, is an Ibec Academy trainer with extensive knowledge in the areas of Occupational Safety and Health Management, Emergency Management, Crisis Management, Business Impact Analysis, Business Continuity Planning, Management Systems Development, Coaching and Mentoring, Facilitation and Communication Skills.
He also worked as an instructor and member of the Defence Force's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) incident response panel and was a regular contributing columnist for the Health and Safety Review providing expert insight and analysis regarding all aspects of Occupational Safety and Health Management.
Elaine Bowers
Elaine has over twenty five year's experience working in the area of Environment Health and Safety- including five years working in Ibec's Employer Relations Division and now in Ibec Academy as a Senior Commercial EHS Executive.
She is an alternate employer representative on the European Commission's Advisory Committee on Safety & Health (ACSH).
Elaine has particular interest in the cross-over between OSH and the Human Resources function, as well as EHS Management Systems and Corporate Sustainability.
She holds an MSc in Applied Environmental Sciences, a BSc in Environmental Health, a H Dip in Occupational Safety & Health and a Diploma in Employment Law.
I found all aspects of the Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety extremely informative and enlightening.
I have gained a particular strong knowledge of OHS legislation, its interpretation and how I can apply it to the company, ensuring all legal requirements are being met.
