Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a Post-Doctoral Researcher with the Translational Medical Device Lab at the University of Galway, Ireland. This position is funded by Research Ireland ARC Hub for HealthTech and is available from immediately/1 September for 12 months in the first instance, with the possibility of being renewed for a further 12 months.
About the ARC Hub for HealthTech
The ARC Hub for HealthTech is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Northern & Western Regional Programme 2021-2027. It is a collaborative initiative between University of Galway, Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, to guide academic projects in the MedTech and connected health technologies to commercial success on a national scale in conjunction with other Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the Republic of Ireland. The ARC Hub for HealthTech will support the translation of cutting-edge MedTech and connected health innovations into impactful healthcare solutions.
The Translational Medical Device Lab (TMD Lab) is embedded at University of Galway, co-located with the HRB Clinical Research Facility, and has a focus on device design, prototyping, and pre-clinical validation. The Lab partners with Galway’s MedTech ecosystem to enable technology licensing, spin-outs and clinical evaluation of new medical devices. The Lab engages in multiple active projects with MedTech companies to provide researchers with exposure to industry-driven challenges and opportunities for real-world impact. The TMD Lab was established in 2015 as the first medical device lab in Ireland embedded within a regional hospital (University College Hospital Galway).
Role and duties
The role focuses on device design, prototyping, and pre-clinical validation of a novel medical device being developed through the Commercialisation project. The successful candidate will contribute to translating academic concepts into real-world medical devices using structured methodologies such as BioDesign, iCORPs and Lean development.
Salary and terms
Postdoctoral Research salary scale €46,305 - €59,063 per annum, subject to the project’s funding limitations, and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts. The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale, with potential consideration for higher placement based on prior equivalent experience, subject to funding and scale maximum. Salary scales are subject to Research Salary Scales - University of Galway.

Contract type: full-time, fixed term. Availability from immediately/1 September for 12 months in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal for a further 12 months. Closing date for receipt of applications: 17:00 (Irish Time) on 9 October 2025. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered.
