Overview of the role:
The Technical Director at Veolia Ireland is a strategic leadership position that drives technical excellence, innovation, and governance across our energy, water, waste management, and environmental operations.
This role champions sustainable business growth by developing cutting-edge technical solutions for energy supply and production, water and wastewater treatment, and environmental services.
The successful candidate will lead the strategic direction of technical initiatives, ensuring operational excellence and regulatory compliance while delivering commercially viable, high-quality outcomes. Success requires deep technical expertise paired with strong commercial acumen, with a focus on advancing sustainability and accelerating digital transformation across all business sectors.
General Responsibilities of the role;
Strategic Leadership & Technical Direction:
• Develop and implement technical strategies across energy, water, waste, and environmental operations aligned with growth objectives
• Drive innovation and technical excellence in energy production (CHP, biomass, district heating, VPP), water/wastewater O&M, and waste management
• Lead commercially attractive solution development for industrial customers and identify new business opportunities
• Provide country/regional technical governance and manage budgets with significant autonomy
Business Development & Growth:
• Lead technical customer engagement and present compelling proposals across all service opportunities
• Collaborate with Business Development teams to deliver growth strategy and support bid preparation
• Conduct financial modeling of technical solutions and lead technical risk reviews
• Develop strategic partnerships with customers, suppliers, technology partners, and policy stakeholders
Technical Excellence & Innovation:
• Maintain specialist knowledge across energy production, energy markets, water/wastewater treatment, and waste management
• Research and evaluate emerging technologies while leading digital transformation initiatives
• Develop process innovations to generate operational efficiencies and optimise technical solutions
• Specify and develop energy production facilities, water/wastewater treatment systems, and waste management solutions
Compliance & Governance:
• Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality standards across all operations
• Lead senior-level negotiations with regulators on technical and compliance matters
• Implement regulatory changes effectively while minimizing risk and monitoring environmental performance
People Management & Development:
• Directly manage senior technical leaders and their teams across energy, water, and environmental disciplines
• Build high-performing, collaborative teams through talent acquisition, retention, and succession planning
• Coach and develop team members, fostering a customer-centric and environmentally responsible culture
Stakeholder Management & Communication:
• Provide strategic updates to Executive leadership and coordinate cross-functional initiatives
• Engage with customers at director level and represent the organisation in industry forums and regulatory discussions
• Translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences and facilitate collaborative problem-solving
Sustainability & Environmental Impact:
• Develop long-term environmental strategies and integrate sustainability principles into technical decision-making
• Lead implementation of environmentally friendly technologies and support customer carbon reduction targets
• Drive decarbonisation strategies and establish KPIs for measuring environmental performance
To be successful in this role, you will need:
Essential:
• Degree in a relevant technical discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering, Energy Management, or related field)
• 10+ years of technical leadership experience in energy, water, waste, or environmental sectors
• Demonstrated success developing and implementing complex, high-value technical solutions
• Strong business acumen, including financial evaluation, risk assessment, and commercial strategy
• Exceptional relationship management and communication skills across all organisational levels
• Compelling presentation abilities with proven success in engaging customers and senior stakeholders
• Effective leadership and team development capabilities
• Strategic thinking with sound decision-making skills
• Project management expertise with a successful delivery track record
• Experience in business development, proposal preparation, and investment presentations
• Skilled in negotiations with regulators and senior executives
• Comprehensive knowledge of industry regulations and standards
• Track record of driving innovation and continuous improvement
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
• Experience in environmental sustainability and impact assessment
• Professional certifications (e.g., Chartered Engineer status)
Desirable:
• Advanced degree (Master's level) in Engineering or Energy/Environmental Management
• Additional professional certifications (e.g., CEng, PMP, IOSH Managing Safely)
• Membership in relevant professional institutions or actively pursuing chartered status
• Experience with renewable energy technologies and digital transformation initiatives
• International project exposure
• Proficiency in data analytics, modeling tools, and process design software
• Change management experience
• Knowledge of emerging markets and industry trends
• Advanced negotiation and conflict resolution skills
