Consultant Gastroenterologist & General Physician University Hospital Kerry for 37 hours per week
This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Kerry for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Due to the establishment of the HSE Health regions and the geographic realignments of the CHO Areas/Hospital Groups within these regions, the appointing service may differ from that outlined in the Letter of Approval for this post
Main Duties of the Job
This post will significantly assist UHK in reaching national targets for waiting lists for endoscopy in particular while also improving outpatient waiting lists to ultimately ensure safe patient care for both Gastroenterology and General Medical patients.

To participate in the development or undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant’s area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer.
To be responsible for the care and treatment and review of all patients under his/her charge and to maintain clinical autonomy relating to the management and care of individual patients in line with the agreed Work Schedule

Information about the organisation
The Department of Gastroenterology at UHK provides General Gastroenterology, IBD, Hepatology, and Endoscopy services to the population of Kerry and some patients from Co. Limerick and North Cork. The immediate catchment population for UHK is 157,000 and increases to 180,000 when referrals from North Cork and West Limerick are taken into account. There is one Consultant in the Department who provides Gastroenterology at UHK. There are general Gastroenterology and Hepatology clinics and a specialist clinic for inflammatory bowel disease. A full range of endoscopy services including bowel screening, therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy for the region, is provided, in the JAG accredited Unit at UHK. A regular endoscopy user’s group meeting takes place to discuss operational activity in the unit. There is close cooperation with Colorectal surgeons in UHK. These is also close cooperation with Gastroenterology colleagues in Cork University and Mercy Hospitals.
UHK is affiliated with UCC has a long-standing relationship with our colleagues in UCC and there is an active research profile at the hospital.
Secretarial/Administrative support is presently provided to the incumbent post holder.
There will be requirement for similar support to the incoming post holder – This will take the format of separate business case process through the HSE South West Region.

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026:
€235,862 €248,612 €262,070 €269,154 €276,236 €283,318
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
