Role Summary

A new opportunity has arisen for an Electrical Engineer to join our client’s pharmaceutical facility in Co. Wicklow.
This position reports directly to the Engineering Capital Lead and supports delivery of the Wicklow Site capital project by providing electrical engineering oversight to ensure all electrical systems are designed, installed, commissioned, and maintained in compliance with cGMP, site procedures, applicable codes, and company Engineering Standards.
The role ensures full compliance with site Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies and statutory requirements.
Provide electrical engineering leadership to support successful project delivery from design through handover and operational use.
Ensure project deliverables meet electrical requirements for:

In-build layout (electrical rooms/areas, routing, segregation, accessibility, maintainability)
In-build finishes (installation quality, identification/labelling, housekeeping, as-built accuracy)
Automation/control system interfaces (PCS/PLC/MCC/VSD/panel interfaces, power supplies, earthing/EMC considerations where applicable)
Equipment integration (power availability, isolations, interlocks, vendor interfaces, installation readiness)
Commissioning & Qualification support (electrical scope readiness, issue resolution, turnover evidence)

Core Duties and Responsibilities
Project electrical scope ownership (PCS & upgrades)

Own delivery of electrical scope for projects including power distribution upgrades (MV/LV), PCS/automation power and control infrastructure, UPS/backup interfaces, and associated enabling works.
Define installation requirements and deliverables: drawings, specifications, schedules, installation packs, work method statements, test/inspection plans, and handover dossiers.

Contractor accountability & site execution oversight

Act as the site lead for electrical contractors: supervise day-to-day execution, verify competence, enforce permit-to-work/LOTO, review RAMS, and drive schedule and quality performance.
Ensure right-first-time installation through inspections, hold points, punch list management, and closure of defects/deviations.
Participate in design reviews, site inspections, and construction walkdowns; identify issues early and drive timely resolution and closeout.
Ensure electrical documentation is accurate, controlled, and complete, including redlines/as-builts, test records, certificates, and O&Ms manuals as required for handover.

Cable containment, routing, and installation (explicit project focus)

Support the design intent and field execution of:
Cable route selection (segregation, accessibility, maintainability, GMP considerations)
Containment installation (tray, ladder, conduit, trunking, gland plates, supports, fire stopping)
Cable pulling/laying, identification/labelling, protection, bend radius, and mechanical integrity
Termination and glanding (panels, JB’s, motors/instruments, VSD/MCC/PLC/PCS panels)
Ensure documentation reflects installed conditions (redlines/as-builts) and that cable schedules are controlled.

Panel / equipment location and integration

Define and approve panel locations (MCCs, VSD panels, control panels, marshalling cabinets, local isolators) considering access, heat dissipation, environmental rating, and maintainability.
Coordinate electrical interfaces with automation/instrumentation and OEM equipment vendors (power, interlocks, IO marshalling, earthing, EMC).

ATEX / hazardous area compliance (where applicable)

Ensure all works in hazardous areas comply with ATEX and site hazardous area requirements:
Equipment selection and certification, correct installation methods, segregation, earthing/bonding
Glanding/termination practices for Ex equipment, sealing requirements, integrity of barriers
Verification dossiers, inspection regimes, and documentation required for compliant handover

Instrumentation (high-level interface)

Working knowledge of basic instrumentation installation interfaces, including correct cable selection, routing/segregation, shielding/earthing principles, and termination at instrument heads/junction boxes/panels in line with site standards.
Support/oversight of contractor activities related to instrument cabling terminations and identification/labelling, ensuring documentation and redlines/as-builts are updated accordingly.

Testing, commissioning support, and handover

Ensure contractors execute and record required testing (as applicable): continuity, insulation resistance, earth fault loop, RCD/relay testing, functional checks, panel FAT/SAT support, and energisation readiness.
Coordinate safe energisation plans and provide structured turnover packs including test results, certificates, O&Ms manuals, spares, and asset data.

Technical governance & documentation control

Maintain control of electrical drawings/records for project scope (single lines, layouts, schematics, cable schedules, termination diagrams) ensuring accurate, approved, and current versions.
Implement and maintain site/project electrical standards and ensure contractor alignment.

Cross-functional coordination

Work closely with Engineering, Automation/ITOT, Operations, EHS and (as required) Quality to prevent downtime, manage interfaces, and resolve field issues quickly.
Participate in risk assessments, inspections, audits, and incident investigations; drive CAPA actions to completion.

Cost, planning, and minor works

Support/prepare electrical inputs to capital submissions and manage electrical scope forecasting (materials, labour, spares).
Execute/manage minor electrical project works that support the main upgrade programme.

Safety leadership

Champion site electrical safety: permit compliance, LOTO discipline, other permit controls, safe isolation practices, and contractor safety performance.
Promote energy efficiency opportunities identified during upgrade works (where in scope)

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Degree in Electrical Engineering is essential.
At least 5 years’ experience in a similar role in a GMP-regulated manufacturing environment plus exposure to Electrical installations within an ATEX environment.
Experienced in similar roles within the Pharmaceutical/Chemical industry, s/he will have a proven track‑record of consistent high performance and delivery in a complex, global and matrixed environment.
Possess a strong analytical acumen with ability to interrogate project financial data and take appropriate actions.
Deep understanding of GMP and the Quality standards required in the API Manufacturing sector.
Understanding of ATEX and Machinery Directives and statutory requirements.
Exposure and strong understanding of MV&LV substations, transformers, distribution ring mains, LV switch rooms.
