About the post

The Department of Surgical Affairs (DOSA) is responsible for training surgeons and emergency medicine personnel as well as offering post graduate courses in advanced clinical practice, masters in surgery and surgical science and practice. In addition, CPD courses are available both online and hybrid online/class forms. Online courses support by DOSA are hosted on the Moodle platform.

This role involves both maintaining and creating courses using our Moodle platform for our CPD courses, Post Graduate Courses and other courses offered. In addition, a portion of the work involves support our faculty to both make content available and support faculty in maintaining content. The role involves liaising with several course owners, surgical faculty as well as the IT department for Moodle support. The usual Moodle admin tasks such as enrolling, reporting and testing will be required.

Duties include:

Course Development & Design

* Collaborate with subject matter experts to scope, storyboard, and produce structured online learning modules.
* Transform draft materials (e.g., PowerPoint) into multimedia-rich Moodle courses using AI tools where appropriate.
* Apply best practices in instructional design, accessibility (e.g., Universal Design for Learning), and mobile-first content layout.
* Create or refine quizzes, clinical scenarios, and assessments using AI tools like ChatGPT.
* Create and manage Moodle courses and modules, including enrolment, user groups, and course configuration.
* Maintain content across CPD and postgraduate programmes—ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
* Troubleshoot user issues and enrol new learners (including batch processing for CPD course registrations).
* Manage course landing pages and associated Moodle plug-ins.
* Oversee annual course refresh cycles and self-paced CPD course updates based on learner feedback.

Stakeholder Support & Collaboration

* Act as the primary contact for Moodle-related support and technical queries.
* Coordinate across academic leads, course administrators, IT support, and external contributors.
* Support SMEs and administrative teams through informal training and onboarding as needed.
* Provide clear communication on project timelines, feedback cycles, and course launch schedules.

Project and Process Management

* Attend team meetings and contribute updates on e-learning projects and innovation strategies.
* Evaluate course effectiveness through feedback forms and learner performance data.
* Participate in broader projects across DOSA and the university as required.
* Stay current with developments in instructional design and online learning platforms.
* Representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI at all time

Person specification

* Experience administering Moodle or another LMS
* Proven instructional design experience, ideally in a healthcare or academic setting
* Strong understanding of course structure, online pedagogy, and learner-centred design
* Familiarity with multimedia creation tools (e.g., Synthesia, Canva, ElevenLabs, Audacity)
* Experience supporting non-technical users and delivering informal training
* High attention to detail, excellent time management, and a proactive attitude
* Understanding of instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE)
* Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning and accessibility standards
* Familiarity with tools such as H5P and AI content creation platforms (ChatGPT, Copilot)
* Experience working in medical education or with clinical content
* Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
* Excellent organisational and multitasking abilities
* Self-motivated, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team
* A creative mindset, with a focus on learner engagement and continuous improvement
