Scope
The Physical Therapist provides services to students with exceptional educational needs by improving, developing, restoring, or maintaining their active participation in self-care, work, leisure, and play within the educational environment. This position functions as a related service provider in accordance with state and federal regulations under IDEA and Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Key Responsibilities
* Participate in the IEP / 504 process to determine the need for physical therapy as a related service or reasonable accommodation.
* Collaborate with students, families, and team members to gather functional motor performance data in school settings.
* Select, administer, and interpret appropriate screening and assessment tools.
* Evaluate students’ strengths and needs to support meaningful participation in school routines and activities.
* Design and implement targeted physical therapy interventions aligned with educational goals.
* Document and measure student progress related to physical therapy services.
* Consult with school personnel, parents, and students to coordinate therapy services, which includes : Interpreting assessments and offering recommendations. Explaining how motor and sensory impairments affect academic performance. Training caregivers in physical management strategies. Advising on equipment use, safe lifting, gross motor programming, and adaptive tasks. Helping set realistic expectations for student outcomes. Selecting or modifying adaptive equipment and assistive technology.
* Collaborate with school teams to ensure effective delivery of physical therapy within the educational program.
* Adapt learning environments to support student access and participation.
* Educate staff and families on inclusive strategies, assistive technology, and intervention effectiveness.
* Support safe student transportation needs.
* Refer students to other related service personnel or medical providers when needed.
* Serve as a liaison between the school, medical personnel, and equipment vendors.
Minimum Qualifications
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from an APTA-accredited institution.
* Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Physical Therapy.
* Valid Connecticut license to practice Physical Therapy.
