Clinical Nurse Manager II Day Ward, FTC
Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford, Ireland.
Job type: Fixed Term. Duration: 11‑month contract.
Overview of role
We are recruiting for the CNMII Day Ward on a fixed‑term contract at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. The CNMII plays a pivotal role in service planning, coordinating, and managing activity and resources within the clinical area, and will lead the implementation and provision of high‑quality care.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
* Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence‑based care planning approach.
* Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
* Co‑ordinate, assess, plan, deliver and review service user care by all staff in the designated area.
* Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.
* Participate in teams, meetings and committees, communicating and working in cooperation with other team members.
* Facilitate coordination, cooperation and liaison across healthcare teams.
* Collaborate with service users, families, carers and other staff in treatment and care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.
* Ensure that the care delivered by the team is based on evidence‑based standards and hospital policy.
* Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital’s quality systems.
* Develop and promote good relationships with patients, families and carers, making the ward an environmentally welcoming and homely place.
* Act as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team, promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department.
* Ensure that all staff are familiar with the use and care of all equipment and that equipment is maintained in good working condition.
* Ensure strict confidentiality of patient information.
Managerial Responsibilities
* Provide supervision, coordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure optimal delivery of care.
* Manage communication at ward and departmental level and facilitate team building.
* Provide staff leadership and motivation conducive to good working relations and performance.
* Manage resources efficiently and effectively.
* Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
* Lead and implement change.
* Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures; monitor and lead proactive improvement.
* Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
* Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure by supporting the Assistant Director of Nursing and deputising in their absence.
* Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Quality & Safety – Safe Culture
* Actively pursue excellence in quality and safety, participating throughout the workday.
* Work with line managers to plan, monitor, analyse and improve all quality programs.
* Participate in developing performance indicators with department manager and business objectives.
* Initiate, participate in, and evaluate audits according to CHKS, JCI, JAG, HIQA, hospital policy and Lean requirements under guidance of Senior Nursing Leadership and the Quality team.
On‑call Rota
* The post holder will be expected to take part in the on‑call manager’s rota.
Staff Development and Education
* Ensure that the care delivered to patients/clients results from individual assessment of care needs and actively promote this within the ward team.
* Ensure that a staff development and induction programme for trained and untrained staff is in place for the clinical area.
* Ensure that each member of staff has a personal development plan addressing the requirements of their present post and providing the opportunity for further development.
* Facilitate an environment conducive to promoting reflective practice.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by NMBI.
* Completed a Management Course or committed to undertaking one.
* Minimum of 5 years qualified with previous experience within an acute surgical/medical environment.
* Previous management experience is essential.
* Experience in change management.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Awareness of HR policies and procedures.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft packages.
* Active role in continuous improvement programme using lean tools and methodology.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Effective communication with medical staff, multidisciplinary team members, patients and relatives.
* Implement change in accordance with new developments in nursing.
* Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Well‑developed leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills.
