Senior Engineering Manager, Data & ML Platform
Datavant is the data collaboration platform trusted for healthcare.
Guided by our mission to make the world's health data secure, accessible and actionable, we provide critical data solutions for organizations across the healthcare ecosystem – including providers, health plans, researchers and life sciences companies.
From fulfilling a single patient's request for their medical records to powering the AI revolution in healthcare, Datavant's partners are building the future of how data is connected and used to improve health.
The Senior Engineering Manager for Data & ML Platform is a player-coach: a hands-on technical leader who still ships code on the critical path, and an experienced people manager who grows engineers across data and ML disciplines.
You will own the foundation that every Datavant product depends on – the data lake and warehouse that hold the world's clinical data, the ingestion and streaming frameworks that keep it flowing, and the ML platform that turns data into models, document understanding and LLM-powered features, along with the operational guardrails that make it all safe for regulated healthcare data.
You will manage brilliant engineers across three teams:
Lake & Warehouse Infrastructure
: the storage and query foundation – data lake / lakehouse, warehouse, table formats, governance, performance and cost.
Ingestion & Streaming Frameworks
: the movement layer – batch and streaming ingestion, CDC, document intake and the frameworks that product teams use to land new sources safely.
ML Platform
: training and inference infrastructure, OCR and document-understanding pipelines, LLM serving and evaluation, feature store, model registry and LLM observability.
The Data & ML Platform group is globally distributed, yet our Ireland-based engineers work alongside U.S. counterparts on the same teams.
We operate as
one team
across both locations with shared goals, roadmaps and technology leads.
This role is for someone who treats AI as a primary teammate, not a buzzword.
You should already be using tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or a similar AI assistant daily in your own engineering work and expect the same of the teams you lead.
Key Responsibilities
Set a unified vision
across the three teams and own a single Data & ML Platform roadmap.
Make the platform a multiplier
by balancing day-to-day product needs with long-term platform investments – success is measured by how much faster product teams can ship.
Offer a world-class ML platform
that handles caching, observability, cost-awareness and PHI safety.
Ship
on the teams' roadmap commitments and influence where technical investments are required.
Grow the team's capacity
by mentoring, providing feedback, and conducting effective 1:1s while actively contributing to hiring.
Lead cross-engineering collaboration
with the U.S. peer manager, product, research and data stakeholders, and contribute to engineering-wide strategic decisions.
Manage vendor and platform spend
with finance and infrastructure on cloud, GPU, and API costs.
Ensure regulated-data guardrails
– meet and exceed PHI handling, auditability, lineage and clinical safety requirements.
Key Qualifications
At least 8 years of industry experience developing software or managing Cloud Infrastructure and 3 years of team-management experience.
Hands-on technical depth – writing production code, reviewing PRs and unblocking engineers.
AI-native working style – fluency in tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot.
Leadership track record – setting long-term vision and growing senior engineers.
Data platform experience – production data ingestion, lakehouse/warehouse, open-table formats, governance, catalog, lineage and cost optimisation.
Regulated-data instinct – experience with HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, GDPR or equivalents.
Exceptional communication – proactive, collaborative and effective in ambiguity.
Nice to Have
Experience with healthcare data (EHR, claims, clinical documents, HL7/FHIR).
GPU capacity planning experience.
Leadership of a team that runs evaluation and red-teaming for clinical or safety-sensitive AI.
