Job Overview
The National Metrology Laboratory (NML) division of NSAI is responsible for maintaining Ireland's National Measurement Standards for Mass and Length.
By delivering calibration services that disseminate these standards, the NML supports a wide range of Irish industries and ensures accurate, reliable measurements.
This role also underpins the activities of the National Legal Metrology Services, their panel of authorized verifiers, and the country's network of commercial calibration laboratories.
The Metrologist position in NML is pivotal for dissemination of the SI units to Irish stakeholders, through the provision of traceable calibration services to customers.
In addition, this role contributes to maintaining the NML quality system in accordance with ISO/IEC ***** and ISO ****, and it involves active participation in both EU-funded and NSAI-funded research in the field of metrology.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Perform calibrations of NML's internal standards and related measurement equipment, as well as the provision of commercial calibrations to NML's customers.
Complete customer equipment calibrations in accordance with established NML SOPs, including the performance of as found results, adjustment and recalibration if possible and the generation of calibration certificates.
Maintain strict compliance with all safety and quality requirements in the Laboratory, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), where necessary.
Participate in daily laboratory upkeep and maintenance activities.
Contribute to the ongoing monitoring and maintenance of the Laboratory Quality System.
Liaise with customers, addressing questions and providing clarification regarding calibration work.
Assist in the maintenance of the national standards activity, including but not limited to:
Ensuring the technical validity of NML's standards
Identifying and initiating actions to further develop the NML standards
Ensuring the International equivalence of the NML units.
Plan for the improvement in the range and quality of measurements to meet the developing needs of Irish users.
Manage Research projects and activities within the laboratory, including but not limited to:
Providing technical input to NML's internal and/or external research activities.
Attend national and international meetings and/or workshops associated with research.
Identifying and initiating new research activities in the laboratory in line with the NSAI strategic plan.
Identify and implement opportunities for efficiency improvements in the laboratory via the use of information technology or otherwise.
Provide input in training courses in the area of metrology.
Assist in course improvements and updates to meet changes in market requirements.
Any other duties assigned by the Head of NML from time to time.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
Minimum two years' experience in metrology and calibrations and experience working in a regulated laboratory environment.
Proven strength in numerical analysis and knowledge of uncertainty calculation.
Solid IT skill set, including coding and programming capabilities.
Desirable
Demonstrates strong proficiency in modern practices related to AI, machine learning, and automation.
Shows a solid understanding of current technological trends in physics and the ability to identify those most relevant to Metrological applications.
Possesses in-depth knowledge of the requirements outlined in ISO/IEC ***** and ISO ****, ensuring adherence to international quality and accreditation standards.
Technical Competencies
Skilled in using and managing IT systems for remote instrumentation communication and control.
Competency in programming and interface design is advantageous.
Demonstrates excellent numerical ability and a careful, systematic working style.
