About The Role
As Director of Nursing, you will be a key member of the Senior Executive Team, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. You will provide strategic leadership for Nursing services within the Hospital while contributing to the wider strategic direction of the Mater Private Cork Hospital. This is a highly influential executive role, with responsibility for shaping nursing practice in line with the Network’s ambition to lead and elevate standards of care across the Network. You will act as the professional leader for nursing, championing excellence in clinical practice, strengthening governance frameworks, and embedding a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Provide strategic and operational leadership for all nursing services
Contribute at Executive level to the Hospital's strategic plan and operational performance
Advise the CEO and Senior Executive Team on nursing and clinical care matters
Drive excellence in patient safety, quality, and clinical outcomes and a culture that promotes patient safety and high standards of ethical conduct
Lead, inspire, and develop a high‑performing nursing workforce
Promote innovation and champion a quality improvement culture that drives continuous quality and business improvement across the Hospital
Strengthen clinical governance, audit, risk management, and regulatory compliance
Lead the professional development, education, and continuous advancement of nursing practice
Promote advanced practice roles, research, and leadership development across Nursing and identify the operational and educational impact of relevant best practice clinical guidelines
Oversee workforce planning, resource utilisation, and financial stewardship
Establish, coordinate and introduce the necessary technologies, processes, reporting and teams to drive forward‑looking data‑informed decision‑making capability
Foster strong multidisciplinary collaboration to enhance patient experience and outcomes
Professional Qualifications and Experience
Registered General Nurse with active registration with NMBI
Significant senior nursing leadership experience (minimum 7–10 years) in acute healthcare in a hospital of sufficient scale and complexity
Proven ability to operate effectively at executive and strategic level
Postgraduate qualification in Nursing, Healthcare Management, or related discipline
Strong track record in clinical governance, quality improvement, and organisational change
Excellent leadership, influencing, change management and stakeholder engagement capabilities
