The Senior Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) role offers the opportunity to work alongside Clinical Specialist, Senior and Basic Grade SLTs and Therapy Assistant colleagues in delivering extensive care for communication and swallowing difficulties to inpatients and early supported discharge (ESD) patients in the Stroke Service of TUH.
The role emphasizes training, collaboration, support and close team-working, providing rotational opportunities across the inpatient and ESD Stroke service.
It is part of a comprehensive multidisciplinary Stroke service, coordinating and developing the service, supervising junior staff, and participating in education, service development and research.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Provide timely and clinically appropriate assessment, diagnosis and management to patients with communication and swallowing disorders, ensuring full patient involvement.
Maintain high standards of quality clinical practice for self and junior staff.
Demonstrate clinical effectiveness using evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
Act as a key member of the multidisciplinary team, advocating for speech and language therapy in collaboration with primary care colleagues and GPs.
Supervise colleagues, prioritise and allocate work and promote positive staff morale and teamwork.
Manage clinical risk within own service and designated team.
Maintain accurate records in line with professional standards and legal requirements.
Collaborate with the Manager and Clinical Specialist SLT on operational and service delivery issues, contributing to business cases.
Participate in working groups/committees and represent the department as delegated.
Develop, read and adhere to hospital and departmental protocols, policies, procedures and guidelines.
Assist in recruitment, induction, probation, supervision and performance management as required.
Be ICT competent with experience using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other desktop software.
Work within departmental and national guidelines, professional code of conduct, and ethics as per CORU and IASLT.
Deputise for the Manager in their absence when requested.
Perform any other duties assigned by the Manager.
Education and Development – Self and Others
Keep abreast of clinical developments through formal and informal CPD.
Participate in departmental supervision and performance achievement programmes.
Engage in internal training and mandatory programmes.
Teach and support junior staff, students and assistants.
Ensure new therapists receive induction and clinical supervision.
Assist in clinical training and assessment of students and qualified therapists.
Organise and facilitate local, national and international training programmes for clinicians.
Innovation, Quality & Service Improvement, Audit & Research
Collaborate with senior staff to organise and provide the SLT service.
Collect, collate and analyse workload statistics for departmental use.
Undertake innovative service and quality improvement and clinical audit activities.
Participate in research opportunities where possible.
Report and disseminate audit, quality improvement and research outcomes.
Adapt practices based on new learning and developments.
Co-supervise undergraduate research projects where possible.
Qualifications & Experience Required
Essential
Registered Speech and Language Therapist with CORU.
Minimum of 3 years full-time post-qualification clinical experience (2.5 years eligible for panel).
Demonstrated experience in Stroke.
Independent competence in managing adult eating, drinking and swallowing disorders.
Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Recent evidence of continuing professional development relevant to Stroke.
Evidence of service development or quality improvement experience.
Experience supervising Speech and Language Therapists, students or therapy assistants.
Clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to fulfil role duties.
Knowledge and professional ability for proper discharge of duties.
Desirable
Experience in an acute hospital setting.
Post-graduate competence in adult videofluoroscopy and/or FEES interpretation.
Reward & Recognition
Remuneration according to Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, grade code ****, pro-rata for part-time 17.5 hours.
Part-time permanent position; panel may fill future full-time or part-time roles.
Aleave entitlement of 29 working days per year (pro-rata); leave year April–March.
Weekly working hours of 17.5 hours, adaptable between 8 am and 8 pm across seven days to meet extended day services.
