Principal Physicist – Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9
Reports to: Chief Physicist and Head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE) Department or their designate.
Salary: Principal Physicist (€96,778 - €132,483 LSI), in line with Government pay policy.
Contract: Permanent, Full‑Time – 35 hrs per week.
Location: Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9.
Closing Date: 12 Noon on 10/4/2026. Interviews will be held on 20 or 21 April 2024.
General Description Of The Post
The role primarily involves leading the provision of physics services to the HSE Dublin & North East Region. The post holder will act as Radiation Protection Adviser, Medical Physics Expert and Laser Protection Adviser, providing scientific, technical, and business advice and support. They will lead a team of physicists, work with multidisciplinary stakeholders across the region, and be part of the Beaumont MPCE management team.
Travel between hospitals in the group is required; a current driving licence is mandatory.
Responsibilities

Manage the provision of medical physics services to the RCSI Hospital Group, including supervision of scientific and technical support in Radiation Protection, Diagnostic Radiology Services, MRI, Medical Lasers and Phototherapy.
Be an active member of the MPCE senior management team, contributing to the department’s strategic goals and objectives.
Provide leadership within the MPCE department, especially in imaging and radiation physics service delivery, focusing on image quality optimisation and quantitative assessment.
Oversee, prioritise and direct activities within the RCSI Medical Physics Group.
Ensure appropriate protocols, procedures and structures promote a high‑performing physics service.
Advise on the acquisition of new technology and equipment, including planning and equipping of new installations.
Manage departmental staff resources in collaboration with radiology departments and other departments.
Contribute to planning, development and continuous enhancement of physics services.
Develop and maintain relationships with radiology stakeholders within Beaumont and externally.
Liaise with senior management to ensure delivery of service goals and objectives.
Analyse physics requirements and anticipate equipment resources needed to meet objectives.
Lead project management for equipment procurement, including specification, tender evaluation, pre‑installation planning, installation, acceptance testing and commissioning.
Contribute to clinical justification and system specification prior to medical device purchases.
Provide scientific and technical review of tender responses within procurement.
Maintain technical equipment specifications.
Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules and safety programmes for medical devices.
Provide ongoing education and training to hospital staff on radiation safety.
Assist with orientation and teaching/training programmes for new staff, personnel and students.
Establish, implement and manage quality assurance protocols for equipment infrastructure.
Participate in Quality Assurance and Risk Management Programmes, particularly statutory requirements.
Engage in self‑directed, self‑initiated learning for professional development.
Maintain accurate records of work performed.
Support and initiate research and development activities in collaboration with colleagues, industry and academia.
Lead and participate in academic, seminar programmes, in‑service lectures and clinical meetings.
Represent MPCE at internal and national fora as appropriate.
Occasionally manage day‑to‑day department services to cover holidays and sick leave.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Mandatory

Hold a recognised first or second class honours degree in Physics (major subject) with honours.
Hold a postgraduate (MSc. or PhD.) degree in Medical Physics or Clinical Engineering.
Have at least seven years satisfactory experience in fields such as Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Protection Procedures, Clinical Engineering, Radiological Physics, Radiotherapy or Medical Imaging.
Possess requisite knowledge and administrative capacity for the duties of the office.

Desirable

Experience in medical radiation protection, medical imaging, quality assurance programs, MRI safety, phototherapy and medical lasers.
Registered Medical Physics Expert.
Registered Radiation Protection Adviser or experience for inclusion on the RPA register.
Capability to act as Laser Protection Advisor.
Valid driving licence (Ireland) and suitable transport.
